Description
It's time for another of the small towns of the former GDR, which has its own tram network. Halberstadt has 2 tram lines and, along with Dessau and Naumburg, is one of the three smallest urban rail systems in Saxony-Anhalt. The city itself is surrounded by the Harz district and lies north of the famous Harz mountains in central Germany. Years ago, the network included 3 lines, but in order to save money, it was decided to leave only two, which covered all the tracks. The trams run continuously, changing their line at the station. It is therefore possible to travel around the entire network in one car, but only on weekends, because only then does the second tram have its own variant through the Klus district (which is where the third tram used to go), located in the south of the city of tourist importance. Similarly, 5 Leoliner trams, purchased in 2006, are in permanent service. They are all in operation every day, so any outage of even one of them requires the activation of one of the replacement, high-floor Helmuts.
