Description

The 12-kilometer tram network of Halberstadt has a long history: It opened as a horse tramway in 1887 and was electrified in 1903. After the german reunification, the worn tracks were renewed. Trams of the GT4 class, which were previously used in Stuttgart and Freiburg, replaced the last biaxial cars from the 1950s. Due to the low number of passengers, the closure of the entire tram network has been discussed multiple times since the 2000s, even though five modern low-floor trams of the "Leoliner" type were bought in 2005. The tram service will continue until at least 2033.
In this video, we follow the two lines from west to east, passing through the old town center with its countless half-timbered houses. The Leoliners are still in use, as well as the last three remaining GT4 cars.
