CityVext by Odense Light Rail (2021)Søren Storm presents the growth medium CityVext in use at Odense Light Rail. The challenge was to ensure the growth and drainage of excess rainwater in a structure with a height of only 19 cm on top of a solid concrete deck. We provided Odense Light Rail with the growing medium for their track surface. The goal was to ensure that the grass covering, which was to be used along nearly the entire 14-kilometer track, could thrive and stay green all year. The challenge was that the track surface rests on a cast concrete deck, with a total installation height of about 20 cm. Additionally, the concrete deck extends across the full width of the track. This means water diverted from the surface must flow underneath the track surface, beneath the rails, which are raised roughly 20 mm above the concrete deck and extend outward where the water can seep away. Creating a green grass cover with only 20 cm of soil depth is quite challenging. Usually, we recommend a soil depth of at least 30-40 cm for this purpose. The project was described with a two-layer setup, including a drainage layer at the bottom with sea stones and a sand-mixed soil layer on top. Our solution was to use CityVext, which is made of pumice from Hekla volcano in Iceland. It’s a natural, porous lava rock that absorbs water well. When mixed with organic material, it creates an excellent growth medium that retains a lot of water yet remains highly draining. The benefits of combining these properties allowed us to move away from the traditional two-layer solution and opt for CityVext in a single layer. For the contractor, this meant laying out one growth medium instead of covering the 14 km track twice. We delivered up to 12,000 m³ of this medium for the project, which involved significant work hours, regardless of whether the area was covered once or twice. Another advantage of the single-layer approach is the low installation height—around 20 cm to the top of the rail, reducing the root volume available for grass growth by 20 cm. This eliminates the need for a drainage layer that consumes half of the already compacted height, which is sufficient for a lush green surface, as seen here. We are standing in a section where the growing medium was laid during winter and spring. Unconventionally, the area was sown in early summer, during a typical Danish summer marked by heat and drought. Under normal conditions, this could have challenged the grass growth, but today we see a fully covered grass surface between the track elements.
