Tears and cheers, the city council reports with pride on Sunday, August 12th, according to an anonymous journalist. Then the first trams, festively decorated with white and red flags, passed by. Deploying trams in such a short time is no small achievement for the City Council. We are riding on this first line, number 3, along the route from the Gimier depot to the Portowa Gate. Mr. Józef Orłowski, who now drives the tram, first rode this way as a tram driver in November 1945. Although the line is now much longer, it has remained the same. Only Mr. Orłowski has changed, and naturally, the city itself has changed. The tram drivers were the Poznań team that year—old professionals, well organized. A few days after arriving in Szczecin, the Municipal Transport Company was already a thriving enterprise with a director, two deputies, and a 40-person crew. Today, in WPKM, they remember those first brave and energetic trams with pride. Mayor Zen Stachowiak, Bernard Zawodniak, Jan Zawodniak Mazurkiewicz, Stefan Paw, a pioneer, and the administration began retrieving tram cars abandoned on street barricades as early as May 7th. They started repairing the destroyed traction lines in the city center. These first historic trams were converted to horse-drawn traction, and seven were powered by chaff.
