Meet a light rail driver (2025)Torben Asmussen has been a light rail driver at Odense Light Rail since the service began operating in May 2022. Even longer, because he was part of the first team of light rail drivers who were hired in 2021. In the video, he explains why he applied for the job at the time, and afterwards, he takes us into his workplace — the cockpit of a light rail train.
My name is Torben Asmussen, and I've been working at Ban since we started in 2021. A typical day for me is nine hours of work with three days off, totaling 37 hours per week, spread across all days of the week. My shift on a Mix bus typically starts at 4 a.m. and lasts nine hours. Currently, it runs from noon until 9 p.m., spanning late afternoon to 1 a.m. During my shift, I usually make about five trips back and forth—from Hjallse to T T and back—each trip taking roughly an hour and a half. I applied for the light rail driver position when it was advertised on October 20. At that time, due to COVID-19 and my experience driving tourist buses abroad, I thought it might not be feasible. But I looked at the long-term prospects. Since I work in Copenhagen, an opportunity arose here, and I’ve always been inspired by trains on rails that seem to just fit onto a hairnet—yet they drive. So I applied, and I was hired here in F21. This is our workplace—the driver's cabin of a light rail vehicle. We have a key that fits the door and the vehicle, allowing us to activate everything. There’s a black button for neutral parking and to put it in drive, though we usually stay parked. There’s a black lever that controls the drive and brake—the only controls we have. It’s like an accelerator and brake combined. Also, there's a dead man’s switch, which activates as soon as I let go of it, and the vehicle either honks or brakes itself. I need to press this black lever every 17 seconds to prevent automatic braking. Inside the cabin, we have lights, lamps, a horn, and a ring lock—everything we need. The green button here is crucial for passengers. When we press it, the doors can be opened, indicated by a green light. Once the doors are open, the traction lock disengages, meaning we can't accelerate or brake, so the vehicle remains stationary. We then check the mirrors for passenger safety, and when everything looks good, the green light comes on again, and we continue driving. That’s it. We have about 20 seconds to complete each couple of laps.By Odense Letbane - .

Welcome to the tour here at the control center, the facility for controlling and maintaining Odense Light Rail. My name is Mogens Hagelskær, and I am the CEO of Odense Light Rail. I am Søren Thrane, the construction manager at Odense Light Rail. We are standing outside the control and maintenance center, which is the heart of Odense Light Rail, when we begin operations. It is a building just over 8,000 square meters, constructed here over the past few years. Inside, there are already 16 train sets ready to operate on the 14.5-kilometer track. The trains will serve 26 stations along this route, with an expected interval of 7.5 minutes during daytime, and slightly longer gaps during off-peak hours. Today, this location is the core of our light rail system—where trains are maintained, operated in the evenings and nights, and monitored constantly. We will take you on a tour of both inside and outside the train. So, welcome. We are standing here in front of one of our highlights in the project—the train itself. Designing large infrastructure projects involves making sure they match the city they serve. We chose colors and styles that fit Odense and reflect its character. The train features a calm, uniform design. The base color is a creamy white that conveys calmness and a sense of exclusivity, similar to luxury infrastructure. We added a red accent on the top, which is our signature color. The choice of red over blue and green was inspired by Odense’s warm climate—red roofs, yellow sidewalks, and stones—colors that naturally resonate with the city. Inside the train, a quiet, cohesive design welcomes passengers. Look down the length of the train. You'll see a uniform appearance, with the only variation being the red seats, which match the exterior accents—our corporate color—inviting people to sit down comfortably. Further inside, the bars are kept in pure black and white to maintain contrast and clarity. They could have been decorated with colorful LED lights. Still, we chose simplicity to aid visually impaired passengers—who highlighted the importance of high contrast—and to support the overall calm aesthetic. The flex room here replaced extra rows of seats with foldable ones, allowing better capacity during rush hours or busy periods, facilitating easy entry and exit. An additional door enhances passenger flow. The train features an information system with a traditional display showing the current station, along with screens and sound systems that have been removed to keep the environment peaceful. We want riding the train to be a calm, relaxed experience, where passengers can feel comfortable and have respectful conversations. We’ve also worked closely with accessibility groups to optimize contrast for handrails and other features. The entire train design prioritizes accessibility, with no steps inside, allowing free movement throughout. The level platforms enable direct entry and exit at stations, ensuring high accessibility. We’ve also extensively utilized pictograms on windows and doors to assist all passengers.By Odense Letbane - .

This is how the light rail departure screens work (2020)Graphic designer Janik Frithioff from Odense Letbane discusses the functions of the platforms' exit screens, which must ensure high readability and ease of use, particularly for blind users.
We have developed an information system that displays relevant information on a departure screen. On the platform, you can see when the next train is arriving and in which direction. We can also display additional details on the "3rd line" of the departure screen, informing you of any operational irregularities. Regarding user-friendliness, we focus on displaying relevant and accurate information. For this, we use a specially designed font that ensures high readability, especially from a distance. Even from afar, you can see when your train is leaving. Additionally, we use a solar film to maintain readability even under direct sunlight. The departure screens face challenges because they are located at the ends of the platforms and lack a roof, exposing them to weather, wind, and sunlight. On all platforms, alongside an emergency telephone, we have a TTS button—short for text-to-speech. This device helps blind users; they can feel the button and, when pressed, it announces what is shown on the departure screen.
