A trip on the Odense Light Rail (2024)We have created a series where we drive around all stops. Currently, we are working on a series focusing on all S2 stops, and today we plan to visit all stops without the light rail. Our next stop is Parking Odense Syd, situated near the light rail workshop and offering ample parking spaces. As expected, the station also features a waiting room. Next, we will visit Hospital Syd, or is that really all there is? Our actual next stop is SDU Syd Hospital Nord, the first of the three light rail stops on the Odense campus. After that, we will head to Bilka, located near the Global Supermarket, then to IKEA, which is nearby. Our next stop is Rosengårdscentret, which is close by. Rosengårdscentret was the first light rail station, used to test signs and information boards. Then, we will go to Klynge, where an extension of the Light Rail down Ejbygade to Voldsmose is possible. The next stop is one of the narrowest sections on the Light Rail, where the platforms and tracks are narrower, and cycle paths have been completely removed. Moving on, we will visit Albanitorv, where the inauguration party was held just over two years ago. The next stop is Odense Banegård, which still features its old station building beside the current one. Then, we will stop at Vesterbro, where the Light Rail could potentially extend its tracks to Odense SU. Our next stop is Bøgersborg, which has one of the few track lanes. After that, we head to Idrætsparken, which has an extra track to accommodate additional trains during concerts and football matches. Finally, after 26 stops, we arrive at Tarup Center, the last stop on the Light Rail line. There are 16 Light Rail trains in total, each named individually, and two of them will be painted pink for a period of two months.By Elias Sode Karup - .

I Rode EVERY Light Rail System in Denmark! (2024)...at least until Copenhagen opens its light rail system in 2025.
In just 24 hours, I'll ride the entire light rail system in Denmark, covering both of them. We've arrived in Odense, Denmark's third-largest city. We're on the 8:13 train to Svendborg. Oh my gosh, it's a tiny train, and this is so exciting—lots of like, oh my gosh, nice big tray table with a coffee thingy. We're only on this for a couple of stops; we're basically using it to get to the end of the light rail here. Well, thanks for the trip, you little weirdo. I love how tiny this platform is—it's so cute. Over here is the end of the light rail, which I actually can't ride until 8:30. I did this weird thing where you can pre-book a ticket via the app, but you have to schedule it, so it's not available until 8:30, so I'm stuck in this weird little area until then. Look how little space it takes to fit all these bikes—that’s think how much more space it would take to fill with cars if you’d use the same number. This line runs every 7.5 minutes throughout the day, which is very convenient. And something cool is they have separate countdown clocks for each platform, so there's only one train here now, but we know it's leaving in 6 minutes. The next train on this platform isn't leaving for 13 minutes. Slightly concerning, but it appears I need to be online for the ticket to be processed. That is a bit of a concern, given there's no Wi-Fi here. Here's a fun fact: besides the card, which is mainly for residents in Denmark, there's no way to get a physical single ticket. I guess if they yell at me, I'll say there was nothing else I could do. Here’s the route we're taking. We’re going to make our way through the university slowly, then up into town, looping around the city center, and ending at what I believe is a shopping mall. It’s actually quite a long trip, about 40 minutes. This is nice; it's very open. Looks like a couple of stops at the university are temporarily closed or something—first of all, the grassy tracks. Second, I assume this is slated for redevelopment because there's nothing here currently. Light rail station, accessible car dealership—that’s really the middle of nowhere. There are just some random office parks here and there, along with Park and Ride facilities. Wow, these bike racks are so cute. This is a park-and-ride facility with an indoor waiting room. Oh my God, there's a lot of construction going on here now, so in a few years, this will be a much bigger deal than it is now, and the tram will be more useful. Here are the closed areas—there will be a new hospital built on this site. Again, a lot of development around this line. It’s impressive how the tram here has its own right-of-way, with no roads crossing it. On both sides, there’s just construction. That outbound tram is very busy—I think the peak direction now is probably toward the university, not into the city. Perhaps it's the fog, but this large park appears quite ominous. I didn’t know Carl’s Jr. was exported here. There’s a whole stop just for IKEA—that's awesome. I think that's the building the station serves. It’s annoying how there's parking right between us, and you can't tell from this angle that this apartment complex also has parking out front. I wonder if some of these complexes were built before the light rail came in because the newer ones seem to be designed around the line, whereas these older ones were probably here first. The train I’m on is standing room only. I was going to complain about how twisty this line is, but clearly it doesn't matter—tons of people are using it now. We’re entering more old-school dense residential neighborhoods, and I think because of that, we're just seeing more tram passengers commuting into the city. This is a great use of street space, featuring tram tracks, one lane for cars, a protected bike lane, and a sidewalk. Now it's fully pedestrianized, which is even better. Here’s the Central Station, which apparently has this huge building attached. Oh, a light rail-accessible stadium right here. Now we’re at Tarup Center, which is pretty desolate, and the mall doesn't open until 10, so I think we'll take the tram back into the city center. Here’s the mall—you definitely can't say it's not transit-accessible. And given that the mall isn't open, this stop seems very popular—there are already several people here. I got off in the pedestrianized city center, which I’d call an old town, but it's actually quite modern. Overall, this is a perfect tram line—it covers a large part of the city. The university generates a lot of ridership. It runs straight through the city center on its own dedicated track, which is really cool.By Miles in Transit - .

Where should the Sunday trip go - Odense Light Rail (2024)This time, the trip has been finalized both in terms of time and location.
The proposal for this Sunday's trip is to Jelse, located in the southern part of Odense, near the E20 highway. Initially, the village was quite far from Odense. However, over time, Hjallelse has grown significantly and has become part of Odense. The Svendborg Line has a station in Hjallelse. Are there good connections to Odense and the towns along the Sønderborg route? The latest addition to the line is the Light Rail, which terminates at this location. The Light Rail runs through the city to Tup. The train on the Svendborg Line departs from Hjallelse Station in Odense. This line opened in the summer of 1876.
Right now, the motorcycle is on holiday, as we’ve had the chance to observe the progress of the light rail outdoors. The Light Rail kindly allowed a camera to be installed in the windshield, as mounting it outside could risk the camera coming loose. So, it was decided to mount it inside, though the wires and felt in the window give some unusual colors. Ignoring that, you can see the whole trip to Tarup. Here it is. At Svendborgvej, the distances between stations are relatively short to central Odense at each stop. The train stops only briefly but long enough for passengers to get on or off.
On the left is the residential area, while on the right is a large industrial zone stretching all the way to the highway and beyond. Here is Munk Pærevej; we cross it in the background, where you can see the light rail garage, workshop, station, train supervision, and more. Parking at Odense Syd is designed for those who prefer not to bring their cars into the city, and free parking is available. We then enter an area where construction is still ongoing—namely, the new Oh in Time hospital. It’s set to become a huge hospital. The stop, Hospital Syd, isn’t operational yet, so from here, nearly 900 meters north, there are educational institutions. The light rail runs beneath the building here, with additional structures to the right. The overhead line isn’t perfectly straight because the power supply might wear out around Sommersted, but with a slight change of direction, it can cover a larger area. There’s also transverse traffic on the track, as many people use bikes to get around.
Now, the trip heads toward Cortex Park, which features student housing and a variety of commercial buildings that are gradually appearing. We’re now approaching a large commercial area with shops of all sizes. Dennes SPS Aleve crosses Odense. The light rail began passenger service on May 28, 2022, stretching from Hjallelse in the southeast to Tarup in the northwest—about 14 kilometers. The trip from Jelse to Tarup, with stops at each station, takes roughly 40 minutes. The train set is nearly 30 meters long, weighing approximately 40 tons, and can accommodate around 200 passengers, including 60 seats. On the left is the Rose Cross Tent.
Rosengårdcentret is named after the rose garden near Ringvejen, which once had a farm and greenhouse. Next is Munkerisvej, also known as Ringvejen, which changes direction at its intersection and runs parallel to the Light Rail towards Nyborgvej. On the right is the Korslkk Package, named after a farm that used to be on the left side of the road. We then reach Nyborvej, which we follow west; here, a track branching allows continuation toward Volsmose without closing the current route. On the left is Østerbæks Vej, and on the right is Ejby Møllevej. Straight ahead, you see Odense Cathedral, also called Sankt Knuds Kirke. Coming from Middelfartvej, you can also see the church straight ahead. To the right is Frederiksgade, crossing Frederiksbroen—the first cast-iron bridge in Denmark. The building on the right is the Korshær Hostel. Then we pass Albanigade; the building further up is Odense Courthouse, and just beyond it is the Albani Breweries. We then reach Odense Å, with the Catholic Sankt Albane Church ahead—the city’s oldest church. Before the church, you can see the descent to the Beking Cellar, which extends all the way to Thomas Btris Skade. To the left is Odense Cathedral, and to the right is Vestre Gade. HC Andersenhaven is nearby, close to HC Andersen's House. Less than 20 years ago, this area was mainly parking lots; now, it’s filled with buildings. Next is Østre Stationsvej; on the left is Nørregade, and on the right is Odense Railway Station Center, which opened in 1995, replacing the old station from 1914 that had become too small. To the left is Kongens Have, and to the right is Musikhuset.By Provins TV - .

The "Christmas Express" in the snow - Odense Light Rail (2023)Two of Odense Letbane's train sets have been foiled so that they now appear as the "Christmas Express". This has happened in connection with a collaborative campaign with Rosengårdcenteret.
The "Christmas Express" ran for the first time on Thursday 30 November, and will run until 23 December. In connection with heavy snow, it was possible to see the "Christmas Express" in the snow, just to make it all a little more Christmassy.
The trains have also been decorated inside. Excellent initiative!

Most viewed foto - Trams in Odense | New light rail system | Stadler Variobahn (2022)Odense, Denmark's third-largest city, introduced a new light rail system exactly three months ago. The Odense Letbane is the second light rail system built in Denmark in the 21st century, operated by Stadler Variobahn trams. This episode of Trams in Europe offers an overview of the Odense Letbane, including its history, fleet, lines, fun facts, and future, ending with footage. Timestamps: 00:00 Overview of the Odense Letbane 08:45 Footage of the Odense Letbane 09:42 Outro Hello and welcome to the second episode of the Trams in Europe series. Today, we are in Odense, Denmark's third-largest city, to explore its LED bar network. This is one of the newest light rail systems in the world, having opened on May 28, 2022, making it just three months old by the time this video is released. Or, actually, it could be exactly three months because May 28 is two months away from the current date. As with the previous video, which focused on Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, this time we'll explore the history, fleet, and lines of the Odense network, concluding with some fun facts and plans. So, without further ado, let's get started. The Odense light rail is 14.5 kilometers long and currently stretches from Tørup Center to Dalum. This route is not very direct; it takes a semi-circular path around the city, serving the center along the way, as well as various amenities such as universities, hospitals, IKEA, shops, cinemas, and the central train station. There is also a second station served on the line. Currently, there are no line numbers; instead, the destinations are shown, such as Tørup Center, since there is only one line, and it hasn't been named. It just indicates the terminus, Tørup Center, on one end. Here's some brief information about the light rail in Odense: as you can see, it runs from Tørup Center to Dalum, with 24 stations, which is the main point. A fun fact about Odense's light rail is that it is operated by Stradler Variablen, the same fleet used in Aarhus and the London Tramway System. Each of the 16 standard rail lines in Odense has its own name. We rode on line 8, which is labeled L81—a tram called 'Adventure.' Each tram has a name, often with a poetic theme, and graphical links to the name. For example, 'Adventure' is one of these, and although translations can vary, the name tends to evoke a poem or story. In terms of network overview, the entire journey from one end to the other takes approximately 42 minutes, making it a relatively short line. It carries around 200 passengers daily and generates about 35,000 rides per weekday, with an annual ridership of approximately 10-11 million. Since the line is new, much of this data is forecasted. Here's a timeline of the Odense light rail network: it began in 2011, initially with plans for two intersecting lines forming a 'hat shape.' The first stage, connecting Yasi and Tørup, was built and completed. The second stage is planned for the future, which we'll discuss shortly. Before proceeding, let's review some of the terminology. One end is the Tørup Center, with the HLC terminus, visible as it prepares to turn around. The other end leads to Odense's main shopping center, with a terminus that uses switch tracks for pendulum-style trams, which have carriages on both sides. Different angles show the HLC terminus near a train station, and the other terminus near the shopping center. Here, you can also see the interior of the trams, which are slightly different from those used in nearby systems but share similar specs. They even come with cables for connecting additional devices, though they lack USB charging ports; instead, they have long connection points for other uses. You can also see the train station in the background, connecting to the light rail system. Now, back to the timeline. I've shown you some photos of the system, but that's roughly the overview.

Overwhelming light rail start in Odense (2022)After eight years and some billions, you could probably just try a few trips. That's how it sounded when 10-year-old Anders, together with thousands of other Odense residents, attended the opening and free trips of the long-awaited Light rail in Odense.
We were there when the first 2 official light rail trains drove synchronously into Albani Torv, to celebrate the opening of the most controversial construction project in Odense in recent times.
A construction project that has of course had the obligatory delays, lots of construction mess, complaints about nuisances, and local political debate for and against. But even if no one can yet predict how popular the light rail will become, it is set to become a part of the city many years into a future where Odense, like the rest of Denmark and indeed the rest of the world, will have to think about climate-friendly green forms of transport, before global warming and the ongoing climate changes really knock on the door.
You can also watch a local historical look back at the controversy over a disputed highway that divided the city in more ways than one.By Odense ser Rødt - .

Inauguration of Odense Light Rail (2022)Odense light rail was inaugurated on 28 May 2022, and the first train with passengers ran from the station called Parkering Odense Syd, which is located east of Hjallese. The Odense light rail was expected to open at the end of 2020, but the coronavirus and other longer-lasting issues were not in place. In contrast to the Aarhus light rail, the Odense light rail first waited for approval before announcing an opening date. And it must be said that it was a good solution, so that you did not end up with a cancellation at the last minute. In this film, we see clips from the opening day, information about the design, and a bit of history from Odense Sporveje.
Today is May 28, 2022. I am at Hjallese Station, on my way to the Park & Ride facility south of Odense. I won a seat on Odense Letbane's first passenger train, which departs at 10:45 a.m. The trip is non-stop to Tarup, where the mayor and the Minister of Transport will board for the return trip. The first passenger light rail train left from the Odense Syd parking station, east of Hjallese. This station houses the light rail workshop, operated by Keolis, which also manages light rail in Odense and Aarhus. Odense light rail was scheduled to open at the end of 2020, but delays caused by the coronavirus and other long-term approvals pushed back the opening. Unlike Aarhus light rail, Odense waited for approval before announcing an opening date. This proved to be a good decision, preventing last-minute cancellations. At 10:20, the first light rail train in Odense arrived at the platform at the Park & Ride facility, ready to depart with passengers. - I recommend passengers stand up and hold onto the brackets and handrails until they get used to the train's rhythm. On the way to Tarup, I’ll share a little about the design of the new light rail. My name is Janik Frithioff, and I am a graphic designer at Odense Light Rail, where I have worked since 2017, contributing to station and train designs. We're here on train set number 01, named Brunneren. You can see it’s a very bright train with inviting colors, creating a cozy atmosphere, complemented by clear signage. This includes displays and signage along the train. The seats are made of cotton from Kvadrat in Ebeltoft, and the handrails are very visible, painted in subtle colors that won’t pollute the design. Several measures have been taken to make the train appear simple, inviting, and warm. The colors of Odense—sidewalks and buildings—are all warm tones, reflecting the city's palette. The color of our train represents Odense but is intentionally distinct from the cityscape. For blending in, darker colors are used, like the black overhead power poles, whereas the train's light color makes it stand out. We chose green for the emergency door opener—one of the few places in Denmark where this color is used to symbolize an emergency exit, aligning with requirements that emergency signs be green, even though German standards for train construction have red. We investigated and received approval to make it green, which indicates an emergency exit rather than a fire hazard. All communication in our trains and stations is in Danish and English. Our call center has a direct line to stations offering English translation. Signage and announcements are bilingual. The seats are soft and comfortable, unlike the hard seats found in metros or other transit modes. We prioritize quality to give citizens a better experience, even on short trips. We believe in providing high-class public transportation with comfortable seating, smooth rides, and an attractive visual environment. The trains also have large flex spaces for bicycles and strollers. Initially, these spaces were smaller, with a row of seats removed and replaced by foldable seats to increase capacity for bikes, wheelchairs, and prams. Then we arrived in Tarup Center, where many passengers were gathering for the first official train departure. Here, both the mayor and the Minister of Transport boarded for the return trip, with small inauguration ceremonies at each station, where ribbons were cut. At Albani Torv, many people waited for the first two trains arriving simultaneously. - It was fantastic. Lots of happy people. - Silent? - At least, there was only happiness. After that, the last ribbon was cut. And afterward, H.C. Andersen welcomed everyone to the City of Fairy Tales. In ancient fairy tales, the poet writes, "YES!" In millennia, they will come.By Kennys Film - .

Opening of Odense Light Rail (2022)The film shows glimpses of the light rail's opening day, when the centre, trains, and stations were full of happy people and celebrations. There are also features with several locals who talk about their expectations for the light rail.
Dear everyone, residents of Odense, guests, and visitors... a very warm welcome. It's wonderful to see so many people here on this historic day, which is also a special occasion for the city. As an Odense resident, I find it easier to get around now. Traveling to the outskirts is simpler than by bike or car, and parking is easier too. I enjoy the comfort of being able to sit and relax, and drive instead of getting out of my car or bike. That will be a huge benefit. The light rail provides more flexibility and an easier way to get around Odense. It also gives me more independence from my parents. When I want to go to Rosengårdcentret with my friends, we can take the light rail. I am a student at the university here. The light rail makes traveling so much easier for me. It will feel like a big city. The area around H.C. Andersen's House is fantastic, with its sidewalks and buildings. Think about it — there used to be a four-lane road there! That's crazy. I am proud of Odense and the new light rail.By Odense Letbane - .

CityVext by Odense Light Rail (2021)Søren Storm presents the growth medium CityVext in use at Odense Light Rail. The challenge was to ensure the growth and drainage of excess rainwater in a structure with a height of only 19 cm on top of a solid concrete deck.
We provided Odense Light Rail with the growing medium for their track surface. The goal was to ensure that the grass covering, which was to be used along nearly the entire 14-kilometer track, could thrive and stay green all year. The challenge was that the track surface rests on a cast concrete deck, with a total installation height of about 20 cm. Additionally, the concrete deck extends across the full width of the track. This means water diverted from the surface must flow underneath the track surface, beneath the rails, which are raised roughly 20 mm above the concrete deck and extend outward where the water can seep away. Creating a green grass cover with only 20 cm of soil depth is quite challenging. Usually, we recommend a soil depth of at least 30-40 cm for this purpose. The project was described with a two-layer setup, including a drainage layer at the bottom with sea stones and a sand-mixed soil layer on top. Our solution was to use CityVext, which is made of pumice from Hekla volcano in Iceland. It’s a natural, porous lava rock that absorbs water well. When mixed with organic material, it creates an excellent growth medium that retains a lot of water yet remains highly draining.
The benefits of combining these properties allowed us to move away from the traditional two-layer solution and opt for CityVext in a single layer. For the contractor, this meant laying out one growth medium instead of covering the 14 km track twice. We delivered up to 12,000 m³ of this medium for the project, which involved significant work hours, regardless of whether the area was covered once or twice. Another advantage of the single-layer approach is the low installation height—around 20 cm to the top of the rail, reducing the root volume available for grass growth by 20 cm. This eliminates the need for a drainage layer that consumes half of the already compacted height, which is sufficient for a lush green surface, as seen here. We are standing in a section where the growing medium was laid during winter and spring. Unconventionally, the area was sown in early summer, during a typical Danish summer marked by heat and drought. Under normal conditions, this could have challenged the grass growth, but today we see a fully covered grass surface between the track elements. This demonstrates that the chosen solution works effectively.By BG Byggros A/S - .

Series on Odense Light Rail: Deadline is approaching, 1:4 (2021)Odense Light Rail is busy. For several years, the city has been undergoing construction as part of the development of a 14.5-kilometer-long light rail line. The route goes from Tarup to Hjallese, but time is short and the finish line is fast approaching. 1 July is the cut-off date by which the entire long light rail section must be completed, so that the contractors can hand over the construction to the light rail company. Only then can they conduct the final test runs, ensuring the light rail is ready to receive passengers. But the question is when it will be.By TV 2 Fyn - .

The light rail test runs from Hjallese to the IKEA station (2021)In weeks 5 and 6, the light rail ran for the first time from the operation and maintenance center in Hjallese to IKEA Station on Ørbækvej. It took place at a walking pace and was a so-called "line check", where all conditions on the track and interactions with trains, signals, etc., were checked by a large contingent of personnel. However, the test runs will soon kick into gear when the light rail drivers need to be trained. And later in the spring, the test run will be extended to the entire light rail section.By Odense Letbane - .

Three commuters in the future Odense Light Rail (2014)Take a trip with different types of commuters in future Odense.
Dorthe is a commuter. She works as a nurse at Odense University Hospital and lives in Ejby on the Island of Funen. She takes the train to and from Odense every day. When Dorthe arrives at the train station, she lines up to wait for the light rail. The information screen at the station shows the time until the next train arrives. There is a train every ten minutes, so Dorthe rarely waits more than a few minutes. The light rail train arrives, and Dorthe boards along with many other passengers coming from the east and west. It is one of the busiest stops. Many people are getting on and off here. Meanwhile, Dorthe's colleague Katja is driving from Asslev south of Odense. Katja parks her car at the large park-and-ride facility near the motorway and takes the light rail for the last stretch to OUH. Then she has time to look for a parking space. The traffic lights are synchronized with the light rail, making the trip comfortable and reliable. Dorthe uses the time to read and check her phone. On Ørbækvej, a wheelchair user accompanies her. The low-floor design of the light rail makes boarding easy, and people are quick to give way. At the university stops, many students get off, and some also disembark at the hospital with Dorthe. Here, only a moment passes before the train from the park-and-ride arrives, full of passengers. One of them is Katja. The two colleagues head toward the department.By Odense Letbane - .
