The new mini tram for Woltersdorf is finally running | Moderus Gamma (2025)The new trams for Woltersdorf have been in regular service since January 25th. A total of four Moderus Gamma vehicles have been ordered and are now in service. Unlike their predecessors, they feature many new amenities, at least for the Woltersdorf tram. The older vehicles will still be in service for the next few weeks, but their days are numbered.
For just over a week, starting Saturday, January 25th, new trams have been running through Woltersdorf. The Moderos Gamma vehicles are now replacing the slightly over 60-year-old Gota vehicles. While many passengers appreciated these vehicles for their old charm and historical appearance, the new cars are now, of course, equipped with barrier-free entrances, modern design, and a passenger information system. However, some Gota vehicles are likely to still be seen in the first few weeks, as the Moderos Gamma units are still in the commissioning phase, so not all are yet in service. A total of four vehicles were ordered from the Polish manufacturer Moderos, specifically the Gamma model. In Woltersdorf, they also have the specific type UNG LF10 ACBD. The procurement of the new vehicles was publicly tendered across Europe in June 2021. There were two options: either two firmly ordered vehicles with three options, or three ordered cars with an additional option.
The order was then announced on February 22nd, 2022. The Polish manufacturer Moderus was awarded the contract, and a total of three Gamma vehicles were firmly ordered. The fourth vehicle, which was also delivered to Woltersdorf, was then reordered in December 2023, with the first vehicle delivered in March 2024. Test drives and staff training trips began in April 2024. The vehicles were then presented to the public for the first time at the 111th anniversary of the Woltersdorfer Straßenbahn, held on May 19, 2019. At that time, it was still believed that the tram could enter regular service within 2024, but that did not quite happen. Since its first day of operation on January 25th, not all tram routes in Woltersdorf have been converted to the new vehicles. On some days, no Moderus Gamma vehicles operate at all. This means there’s a high chance that a historic vehicle is still in use. However, this is now mostly during rush hours on weekdays, for example. So, a bit of luck is needed, and the good vehicles won’t be in service for much longer. Regular service has now been established; the Woltersdorf tram has, of course, lost much of its charm because the GOT cars have restored it to its former state. For many, it was a day-trip destination on the outskirts of Berlin, thanks to its old vehicles and scenic route. It’s unlikely this will stay the same with the new vehicles. Please share your thoughts in the comments about how you feel about the old vehicles being taken out of service and only the modern Moderus Gamma running through Woltersdorf. However, over the past few years, the tram in Woltersdorf has evolved from an excursion tram to an essential transportation link, connecting the town with the S-Bahn station in Rahndorf. Trams now run every 20 minutes on weekends, and during weekdays, there is even a 10-minute interval during rush hour between Rahndorf’s S-Bahn station and Berliner Platz. This also changes the general expectations for the trams, as many features are now standard in most German tram networks. The new vehicles are a notable innovation in Woltersdorf, including barrier-free and low-floor entrances, station announcements at stops, and many other features that will be discussed later.
A novelty not only for Woltersdorf but for all of Germany is the vehicle manufacturer, Modatrans from Poznan. While Modatrans is a well-known producer among Polish tram companies, Woltersdorf is the first tram company in Germany to receive vehicles from them, and this will likely remain the case for now, as no other cities have ordered cars from this manufacturer. The new trams for Woltersdorf are 15 meters long, have four axles on two bogies, and a width of 2.4 meters. This makes them notably larger and more broadly dimensioned than their predecessors. The Gota vehicles were only 11 meters long, had two axles, and a vehicle width of 2.2 meters. The design of the new cars is also notable, primarily due to their striking, pointed, wind-like front shape. The tapered form makes the tram look significantly shorter than it actually is. Woltersdorf tram - the first use of the Gamma (2025)On January 25, 2025, after many months of waiting for approval of the new Moderus Gamma LF10 AC BD, the big day finally arrived. The four new units will replace the over 60-year-old Gotha cars of the T57/T59 series in scheduled service.
For over 45 years, trams have been a defining feature of Woltersdorf. However, that era is now coming to an end, and with it, the classic two-axle trams, with their characteristic sounds, will disappear from daily life. Yet, with every ending comes a new beginning. At 8 a.m., the depot was already bustling with tram enthusiasts. Tram cars 41 and 42 are ready, with two key figures onboard, and now we're set to depart. "Oh, you're 35, we're heading out on route." Many passengers are already waiting at the stop for this special service. Now is the moment. The scheduled tram, car 32, arrives at the transfer point to pick up its passengers—a gathering of generations. At 8:41 a.m., we're on our way, first to the lock—how fitting. In the background, the old girl is crying. "Take care, old girl." The second trip is also ready. By 9:15 a.m., this will begin again, and we're off once more. Gr, jaör, Hallelleplatz, turn right. Tram Woltersdorf | From Schleuse to Berlin, S Rahnsdorf in Moderus Gama (2025)The switch isn't easy to use, especially in summer. After that, you need to set it properly, typically when the outside temperature is around 30 °C. You come inside for protection, then you first need to shock it down to 15°C—that's exactly right, which isn't great. At 24 or 28°C, it's cold. I switch to travel mode, set the temperature, and everything with ice. In terms of performance, it handles it well. They have what they call GL sch. When it's too cold, we ensure support for climate change initiatives because we waste a significant amount of energy.
When you press the kN button, you need to either lock it or press the lock button; that's enough. If children are present, the door remains open; otherwise, in summer, it stays pressed the whole time—you can't delete that until the door is closed. I mention this because it's annoying; pressing it right is essential. There’s enough space for that. You can see where the button is pressed, and you need to be sure; it’s been this way for a long time. It was already done back in July, then again in August, and I did it again as a surprise. Now I'm completely confused about who, but it was necessary, so I held back. They should actually have a switch on the right side of the door and controls for it. I mentioned the brake test point, exit point, and the exhaust crank—that's how you drive. You have it now, but thank goodness, that didn't work before. You had to do everything manually—no, I'll do it entirely, then set the cruise control to show it. It’s marked and pointed at the foot switch or hand switch, and it detects both separately. This means if you have an accident, you should do it shortly before to react appropriately. You should brake and also signal beforehand when initiating emergency braking. Welcome to Woltersdorf. To start, enjoy the magnificent view of Berlin from the observation tower on Kranichs Bergen. The Woltersdorf tram service is not only the smallest of its kind in Germany but also one of the most beautiful. We begin our journey with the Woltersdorf tram in Rahnsdorf, heading to Woltersdorf Schleuse. These pictures clearly show what makes the Woltersdorf tram so special. In the tram's historical archive, we also found this film from the 1930s. The railcar numbered two has stood the test of time, and we will take a closer look at it. Here is TB 2 in the 1960s as a plan. The railcar is shown in the depot, and this is what the magnificent piece looks like today. Now comes the big moment. The car body is very carefully placed on the Maximum bogies. After the 29 90 is back on its wheels, painting can begin. These photos were taken at the beginning of 2008. - Andreas Kupsch.
