The Belgian City That Built A Metro Line And Never Opened It (2022)
10:21
The Belgian City That Built A Metro Line And Never Opened It (2022)In the mid-1980s, the city of Charleroi started building a metro line. However, with half the stations already completed and the track and signals already in place, construction suddenly came to a halt. The line never opened. What happened? And how much of it is still there? I travelled to the south. It is spring 2022, and I am in the historic coal-mining city of Shalawa, in Belgium's former industrial heartland. Today, we're exploring the Shalawa metro, which is arguably more of a tram than a metro, yet it boasts its own bridges and tunnels nonetheless. But anyway, why are we here? According to Wikipedia, the Shalawa metro is famous for sections of the system that were never built, only partially built, or never opened. What’s the story there? Because if you catch line 4 from the center of town and look out the window at the right moment, you'll see some mysterious tracks branching off and heading into the distance, but they don't appear on the map, and trains never seem to go down there. So where do those tracks go, and what would we find if we got off the metro and tried to follow them? This is the metro line that never opened. Today, we're exploring the lost Line 5 of the Shalawa metro. Although it was actually the third one to be built, that's not important at the moment. Our first mission is to locate precisely where the tracks emerge above ground, and fortunately, that's not too difficult. They emerge into the daylight at the back end of a small park on the edge of the city center. In one direction, the tracks head back into the tunnel where we were just now, but we will follow them in the other direction to see what we can find. This is the Novel station, constructed in 1987 and never opened. Apparently, behind here are still escalators leading up to a ticket office and platforms, but the entrance is blocked, so we can't go in. We’re not going to waste any more time here because it’s clear this is not the end of the line. If there are more stations, I want to visit all of them. Stations on the Shalawa metro are often only a few hundred meters apart, and sure enough, it's not long before we find another one. This is the Shi station, or possibly Shet. I really should have asked the locals how they pronounce it. Just like Novel, it was built in 1987 with a pretty much identical design and, of course, never opened. But unlike Novel, I was able to walk straight in. Let’s be clear, I’m not sure I was supposed to, but it seemed foolish not to take the opportunity to show you what these ghost stations look like on the inside. I’ve visited some major wastes of money on this channel, but this is on another scale. It’s not just a ghost station; it's a whole ghost line that was abandoned without ever being used. It’s like something from a horror story if accountants wrote horror stories. So, what on earth happened here? Well, the short answer is Belgian politics. And let's face it, trying to explain Belgian politics is a bit like trying to run a Belgian restaurant—you can't do it without a lot of waffle. However, we still have a whole abandoned metro line to explore and explain, so let's quickly review the basics. Belgium is divided into three official regions: Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part; Wallonia, the French-speaking part where Shalawa is located; and Brussels, the bilingual and theoretically neutral capital city. There’s also a small German-speaking community, whom I wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t mention. But for major regional issues, they are usually grouped with Wallonia. These days, Brussels has granted Flanders and Wallonia so much autonomy that they make most decisions independently and rarely communicate unless necessary. They’re basically a divorced couple who still live together for some reason. It wasn't always like that—50 or 60 years ago, the ties were closer. Back then, Brussels made most of the big decisions, and the regions had a more sibling-like rivalry—they fought with each other or complained to Brussels because of the other's actions. It seems that way to me from outside—Belgian viewers, you can explain it better in the comments. However, to sum up, Brussels consistently seeks ways to balance the needs of both regions and maintain family unity. In the 1960s, the government devised a clever plan. From that point on, any major project approved in one part of the country had to be matched with an equal project in the other part. This idea that everything done on one side must be mirrored on the other became known in Belgium as waffle iron politics—you can probably guess why. In theory, it was a brilliant idea, ensuring fairness and preventing complaints. But if you haven't spotted the problem yet, it's about to become clear. A few years later, the government decided to make a significant investment by building metro systems in each of Belgium’s five largest cities.By The Tim Traveller - .
TEC Charleroi - Metro Leger de Charleroi - Centenaire - Waterloo (2021)

TEC Charleroi - Metro Leger de Charleroi - Centenaire - Waterloo (2021)Yeah, the so-called factions of the bosses suddenly started making the travelers back down, which dragged things out a little. Otherwise, it will surely help us; pressure is rising, and everyone is going all-in. I'm going in the wrong direction; we really must position ourselves properly. There's no point in sending me so far for those who... yeah, switching is necessary, and we shouldn't cheat. Change as things come, let those suffering with us handle it, or else they'll fall into his caravan for vacation. I seem Khaddam... they say that if it doesn’t go, it will rise today, 2010. We’ll redo it if he wants to, spoke a little about this train bus at the congress. Welcome! So, to make a stop after Guyana, you know my different plans; you can stick to ecology. Everything will be sorted; everything is there for nothing. I was at school, and now I have nothing to do. Plus, the weather is waiting for him—Da Rocha twice, at I think I’m not sure to see you in electric places—that costs a lot. Drivers travel 65 km, with some stopping at the PCC. We see it's not you filling the bin. No, also, schedule conflicts. There’s the branch path, make them come out. I used to guard all shares in the '80s, all the same, because we no longer had enough flat passion on weekends. That’s why, when he was afraid, pressure increased. He waits there—Syberya. When you come, it's much easier, way too early at this station on board. Hello, it's not a gift, the day before the infection—either from the left or right—heading towards. I said, and we see Leviticus. I didn't like it. Okay, Rabelais's comedy. Why not? I see a decision made. Let’s move on now to Waterloo. He asked to take photos three feet lower at the marabouts—our dues are in their bubbles. Apart from what will be false, 345 miles in 5 or 6 minutes, so a little time in front of Jamali Messenger. He’s good at dancing, but always at the top, still bursting because the chair—once even if you want to buy back a little—you must not release it, especially not in the short term. Plus, you can lose air pressure, and when it stops, you’ll have to deal with almost all these novelties. Why ask me that at TSR a little in advance? Billions of which we’re a bit ahead couldn’t be well behind the 30 he had calculated. To take photos, we’ll wait for you, then race. I tell him to suffer—I will call him. Yeah, it’s really like that—you see, the weekends, they calculated that to arrive there at 55.24, which makes it 56. So if it’s a little before, I can...? And street? Because what you must watch out for is the M2, which comes to 4. The balance sheet he left from the old one—I don’t know what it is—is perfect. What’s the use? Let’s organize two shovels and high schools. Well, yeah, he took the schedules, and everything is fine. That’s it. I noted my working hours at the objections, in a sentry box, to show we’re not late today. That with the Sardinellas and Eulogy for the evil they do—taking photos—and then this year. So, Ferdinand’s work, Fertik, will continue until June 6 in the evening. Enough helplessness faced with the ACE level. But Na Waie, for once, I have become almost suicidal with the Wii. I recall this small post he had to do—I mean, it's worse—way totally. I just let go of the traction, but I have passion. It’s especially that this one makes passes. See, confining the wheels, being sure of my father, pulling our action—yes, yes. But the palm has tempered the voice. I spoke too much; I didn't care. Discovered that I endured as long as I would age. Then, this year, this Lucas deficit—more than she would want to dictate—will happen. Yeah, but you have to go to the rooms; it's very complicated. I also did the Belgian one for me. It’s a guy passing by, had a different job title, set his camera, yes, Aquastar in Nantes. Some people take photos all the time—it's in front of her books, craze knife—he’s into music. We really like it. We are announced. I notice that these lights are such small things, often visible in the morning. However, it's like that; it's impossible to block everything. Waterloo late, like Cap Vittel, right? This OTV union of 17 years and the Marie event. But the program—yeah, soon. Help, thank you very much. There’s nothing on the other hand. No, a job allows it; it's important. I kept my tomorrow in the hands of fate all the time. Yes, we stop halfway up—the way you do, your way, for 2 or 3 months of the year—read on page 10. It’s good. Okay, Google doesn't know, yes.By GreenDachshund - .
TEC BN-tram Charleroi in H0 - 4-3-2-1: The Metro splits into 4 (2021)

TEC BN-tram Charleroi in H0 - 4-3-2-1: The Metro splits into 4 (2021)In 2012, a few TEC trams in the NMVB orange livery were still running in Charleroi. After the opening of new pre-metro sections, these trams were covered with advertising for the 'new' metro network. This model was actually the first 3D BN I made, but the paint job was a terrible failure, and the hoods were damaged during the finishing process. After several improved and more detailed versions (the NMVB, TEC, and Kusttram models), I decided to strip and restore these failed hoods. Because the Métro advertising gave them a beautiful and fresh appearance in real life, I created this version. According to the line film, this tram model runs to the new Soleilmont terminus, which opened in 2012. The jewel on the roof is from SkipTram/Vincent Ertel. I now see that the articulation is still a bit too high. We'll adjust that later.By Joury Smets - .

Metro line M1 - Charleroi South - Anderlues monument (2013)Sunday 09/22/13 .... Departure at 3:17 p.m. The line was suitable because there appears to be a deserted industrial area along it that probably served many workers in the past. Now that the industry is gone, there is currently nothing supporting this tram line, leading to very sparse tram traffic. Still, the tram route remains interesting—allowing you to see a lot, including loiterers at some stations and riding along sidewalks—and I enjoyed the video, which also helped keep at least a few tram drivers employed.By Fabien Vervoort - .
