Delivering a Massive Tram to Odense Idrætspark (2026)A massive, high-stakes logistics operation unfolded in Odense on Monday, June 8, 2026! A specialized German heavy-haulage company transported a complete light rail train from the maintenance center in Hjallese to Odense Idrætspark via a flatbed truck. This rapid response ensures an increased service frequency between IKEA and Tarup Center starting Tuesday morning, June 9.
The background crisis:
Since May 22, 2026, Odense Letbane has been forced into severely reduced operations. The main contractor at the new hospital (Nyt OUH), OHPT, abruptly and without warning removed structural supports from a pedestrian bridge directly spanning the tracks. Consequently, the safety approval for that section was immediately suspended.
The mileage trap:
While the track near Nyt OUH remains completely blocked, Odense Letbane secured permission to run a limited shuttle service between IKEA and Tarup Center using just three trams. However, those three trams have now hit their maximum allowed mileage limit before mandatory safety inspections.
To prevent a total shutdown, Odense Letbane brought in German train-transport specialists to swap out the maxed-out vehicles by carrying a fresh tram across the city streets!
Local impact and media coverage:
Local news outlets DR P4 Fyn and TV2 Fyn were on-site to cover the dramatic one-hour operation on Højstrupvej. Meanwhile, replacement buses (erstatningsbusser) continue to mirror the entire route between Tarup Center and Hjallese Station to keep commuters moving.

Light rail train decorated with “Remember My Name” (2026)As an advertisement for an exhibition at the Brandts Art Museum in Odense, the "unknown" artist "Kend Mit Navn" has decorated two light rail trains in Odense. This video shows one set.
Brandts Art Museum writes about their exhibition (which can be seen from December 13, 2025):
You don't know his bourgeois name and face, but you probably know his characteristic black lines
and humorous figures in bright colors from gables, house walls, posters and books. The renowned contemporary artist HuskMitNavn now lets the lines loose and unfolds his artistic universe into a gigantic
total installation in this year's sensory exhibition at Brandts Art Museum.By Lasse Duusgaard - .

Odense Light Rail - Christmas Express (2025)For the third year in a row, the "Christmas Express" was running on the Odense Letbane line from Hjallese to Tarup Center. This year, it was train sets 01 and 02, which have been wearing the pink advertising foil since mid-November 2025. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much "Christmas weather" with snow, so I've had to make do with a single snow shot this year. Here, the train sets can be seen at several locations along the line.By Trainspotting Danmark - .

Meet a light rail driver (2025)Torben Asmussen has been a light rail driver at Odense Light Rail since the service began operating in May 2022. Even longer, because he was part of the first team of light rail drivers who were hired in 2021. In the video, he explains why he applied for the job at the time, and afterwards, he takes us into his workplace — the cockpit of a light rail train.
My name is Torben Asmussen, and I've been working at Ban since we started in 2021. A typical day for me is nine hours of work with three days off, totaling 37 hours per week, spread across all days of the week. My shift on a Mix bus typically starts at 4 a.m. and lasts nine hours. Currently, it runs from noon until 9 p.m., spanning late afternoon to 1 a.m. During my shift, I usually make about five trips back and forth—from Hjallse to T T and back—each trip taking roughly an hour and a half. I applied for the light rail driver position when it was advertised on October 20. At that time, due to COVID-19 and my experience driving tourist buses abroad, I thought it might not be feasible. But I looked at the long-term prospects. Since I work in Copenhagen, an opportunity arose here, and I’ve always been inspired by trains on rails that seem to just fit onto a hairnet—yet they drive. So I applied, and I was hired here in F21. This is our workplace—the driver's cabin of a light rail vehicle. We have a key that fits the door and the vehicle, allowing us to activate everything. There’s a black button for neutral parking and to put it in drive, though we usually stay parked. There’s a black lever that controls the drive and brake—the only controls we have. It’s like an accelerator and brake combined. Also, there's a dead man’s switch, which activates as soon as I let go of it, and the vehicle either honks or brakes itself. I need to press this black lever every 17 seconds to prevent automatic braking. Inside the cabin, we have lights, lamps, a horn, and a ring lock—everything we need. The green button here is crucial for passengers. When we press it, the doors can be opened, indicated by a green light. Once the doors are open, the traction lock disengages, meaning we can't accelerate or brake, so the vehicle remains stationary. We then check the mirrors for passenger safety, and when everything looks good, the green light comes on again, and we continue driving. That’s it. We have about 20 seconds to complete each couple of laps.By Odense Letbane - .

Travel passport Odense (2024)Hey, sorry for asking quickly, but there are some things we need to clarify at the start of this video. We call this Odense Banegård. I looked at a beautiful building that was built in Kolding, or whatever it's called now. I think they haven't built that other building. No, they've built that building over there. My next question is: what is the actual water? I want to say this is a beautiful, iconic building, but of course, this is the track — it's what I grew up with. But I think that building is pretty nice. I want to say that — I almost want to say — it's also next to the hotel where a single verse costs 470 kr. Cool. Next to me is the current tram that will be deployed here in Odense on May 22, 2022. It was originally scheduled for deployment in 2020, but due to COVID-19 and approval issues, it was delayed. Isn't it a kind of tram? Because the last tram here in Odense, and the first cities that had trams, chose their own systems back in 1952. So the last tram ran in July 1952, and over 70 years later, there's a new modern tram or light rail. People debate whether it’s actually a light rail or just a B car, with some differences in opinion and details. Now there is a light rail again. I'm sure it's not the drivers who come out on the rails to get K base. Okay, no, you don't always have to do that. You can check how well your GPS and Maps are working. And that thing about making noise and affecting the cityscape — is it you who moved here for that reason? The light rail is there, and I'd like to share a quick lesson about it in your new home or in Odense, before the light rail was introduced. I understand that, and I think there are some other plans here in Odense, as they’ve considered expanding the line beyond just the route between Tarup and Jales. For example, if they extend it further out or all the way to Vesterbro, as I know it here, you can see that they're preparing for expansion. They’re also planning similar developments in Aarhus, where their light rail runs around HV. It goes there, and some say it works better than Odense’s, while others believe Odense's system is better. The question is whether the city is ready for these changes. And where was it supposed to run? It was between Ishøj and Lunds, and the Sid tram was heard on April 22, 1972. There are different stories, and unfortunately, you may not be able to experience them here, but you can see them at the Tram Museum. I don't think I’ve ever been there, but I might have been there last year. We had a great time and experienced history at the JB Museum last year, which is run by my train club, the TR High Railway Club, located in Herning Municipality. There is also one in Herning, the Herning Mod Model Jing Club. It's going really well, but today is actually a little birthday gift for me because they invested in J Mercedes, as well as some friends and family. That said, of course, I tend to the tenders. I've become a member and bought myself an annual pass. But, uh, what the heck, whether we're going to use mine or theirs, hm, I don't know. So, don't tell anyone, or now you know. I think I know, well, but I'm heading over to that side, and there's still a little time before they open, right? It’s 8:31 now, and the train to Hamburg departs at 8:39 from track 6 and takes about 40 minutes. The 8:39 train to Aarhus and Sønderborg departs from track 5 at 9:10, approximately 15 to 20 minutes later. Aarhus and Sønderborg, T 1 5. There might not be as much to see here in Denmark now as usual because I’ve been here many times a year, but it’s still nice to see the Danish Museum and notice something new, for example. Now, there’s something they don’t have a couple of—I think I can see more than a kof—or I can see more than a kof. Here we have 251, and I still don't know why. It’s still me in Gone, but they’ve taken something from Randers since it’s emptied. So now, there are only Odense, Marslev, and maybe Padborg. I remember that. Uh, yes, we’re going to Atol Place. There’s not much more to experience, so maybe we can go out to the Golden Moon. And, sorry, if you can join the recording, I can't, unfortunately. We’ve left the Danish Museum and are heading out to fill up, which is fairly close to the motorway, out here. Mercedes and Scan are also nearby, so we should have something to eat before driving on, while I figure out where I’m going. One day, I’m considering Svendborg; it’s been a long time since I was there.By pouls train world - .

A trip on the Odense Light Rail (2024)We have created a series where we drive around all stops. Currently, we are working on a series focusing on all S2 stops, and today we plan to visit all stops without the light rail. Our next stop is Parking Odense Syd, situated near the light rail workshop and offering ample parking spaces. As expected, the station also features a waiting room. Next, we will visit Hospital Syd, or is that really all there is? Our actual next stop is SDU Syd Hospital Nord, the first of the three light rail stops on the Odense campus. After that, we will head to Bilka, located near the Global Supermarket, then to IKEA, which is nearby. Our next stop is Rosengårdscentret, which is close by. Rosengårdscentret was the first light rail station, used to test signs and information boards. Then, we will go to Klynge, where an extension of the Light Rail down Ejbygade to Voldsmose is possible. The next stop is one of the narrowest sections on the Light Rail, where the platforms and tracks are narrower, and cycle paths have been completely removed. Moving on, we will visit Albanitorv, where the inauguration party was held just over two years ago. The next stop is Odense Banegård, which still features its old station building beside the current one. Then, we will stop at Vesterbro, where the Light Rail could potentially extend its tracks to Odense SU. Our next stop is Bøgersborg, which has one of the few track lanes. After that, we head to Idrætsparken, which has an extra track to accommodate additional trains during concerts and football matches. Finally, after 26 stops, we arrive at Tarup Center, the last stop on the Light Rail line. There are 16 Light Rail trains in total, each named individually, and two of them will be painted pink for a period of two months.By Elias Sode Karup - .
I Rode EVERY Light Rail System in Denmark! (2024)...at least until Copenhagen opens its light rail system in 2025.
In just 24 hours, I'll ride the entire light rail system in Denmark, covering both of them. We've arrived in Odense, Denmark's third-largest city. We're on the 8:13 train to Svendborg. Oh my gosh, it's a tiny train, and this is so exciting—lots of like, oh my gosh, nice big tray table with a coffee thingy. We're only on this for a couple of stops; we're basically using it to get to the end of the light rail here. Well, thanks for the trip, you little weirdo. I love how tiny this platform is—it's so cute. Over here is the end of the light rail, which I actually can't ride until 8:30. I did this weird thing where you can pre-book a ticket via the app, but you have to schedule it, so it's not available until 8:30, so I'm stuck in this weird little area until then. Look how little space it takes to fit all these bikes—that’s think how much more space it would take to fill with cars if you’d use the same number. This line runs every 7.5 minutes throughout the day, which is very convenient. And something cool is they have separate countdown clocks for each platform, so there's only one train here now, but we know it's leaving in 6 minutes. The next train on this platform isn't leaving for 13 minutes. Slightly concerning, but it appears I need to be online for the ticket to be processed. That is a bit of a concern, given there's no Wi-Fi here. Here's a fun fact: besides the card, which is mainly for residents in Denmark, there's no way to get a physical single ticket. I guess if they yell at me, I'll say there was nothing else I could do. Here’s the route we're taking. We’re going to make our way through the university slowly, then up into town, looping around the city center, and ending at what I believe is a shopping mall. It’s actually quite a long trip, about 40 minutes. This is nice; it's very open. Looks like a couple of stops at the university are temporarily closed or something—first of all, the grassy tracks. Second, I assume this is slated for redevelopment because there's nothing here currently. Light rail station, accessible car dealership—that’s really the middle of nowhere. There are just some random office parks here and there, along with Park and Ride facilities. Wow, these bike racks are so cute. This is a park-and-ride facility with an indoor waiting room. Oh my God, there's a lot of construction going on here now, so in a few years, this will be a much bigger deal than it is now, and the tram will be more useful. Here are the closed areas—there will be a new hospital built on this site. Again, a lot of development around this line. It’s impressive how the tram here has its own right-of-way, with no roads crossing it. On both sides, there’s just construction. That outbound tram is very busy—I think the peak direction now is probably toward the university, not into the city. Perhaps it's the fog, but this large park appears quite ominous. I didn’t know Carl’s Jr. was exported here. There’s a whole stop just for IKEA—that's awesome. I think that's the building the station serves. It’s annoying how there's parking right between us, and you can't tell from this angle that this apartment complex also has parking out front. I wonder if some of these complexes were built before the light rail came in because the newer ones seem to be designed around the line, whereas these older ones were probably here first. The train I’m on is standing room only. I was going to complain about how twisty this line is, but clearly it doesn't matter—tons of people are using it now. We’re entering more old-school dense residential neighborhoods, and I think because of that, we're just seeing more tram passengers commuting into the city. This is a great use of street space, featuring tram tracks, one lane for cars, a protected bike lane, and a sidewalk. Now it's fully pedestrianized, which is even better. Here’s the Central Station, which apparently has this huge building attached. Oh, a light rail-accessible stadium right here. Now we’re at Tarup Center, which is pretty desolate, and the mall doesn't open until 10, so I think we'll take the tram back into the city center. Here’s the mall—you definitely can't say it's not transit-accessible. And given that the mall isn't open, this stop seems very popular—there are already several people here. I got off in the pedestrianized city center, which I’d call an old town, but it's actually quite modern. Overall, this is a perfect tram line—it covers a large part of the city. The university generates a lot of ridership. It runs straight through the city center on its own dedicated track, which is really cool.By Miles in Transit - .

Where should the Sunday trip go - Odense Light Rail (2024)This time, the trip has been finalized both in terms of time and location.
The proposal for this Sunday's trip is to Jelse, located in the southern part of Odense, near the E20 highway. Initially, the village was quite far from Odense. However, over time, Hjallelse has grown significantly and has become part of Odense. The Svendborg Line has a station in Hjallelse. Are there good connections to Odense and the towns along the Sønderborg route? The latest addition to the line is the Light Rail, which terminates at this location. The Light Rail runs through the city to Tup. The train on the Svendborg Line departs from Hjallelse Station in Odense. This line opened in the summer of 1876.
Right now, the motorcycle is on holiday, as we’ve had the chance to observe the progress of the light rail outdoors. The Light Rail kindly allowed a camera to be installed in the windshield, as mounting it outside could risk the camera coming loose. So, it was decided to mount it inside, though the wires and felt in the window give some unusual colors. Ignoring that, you can see the whole trip to Tarup. Here it is. At Svendborgvej, the distances between stations are relatively short to central Odense at each stop. The train stops only briefly but long enough for passengers to get on or off.
On the left is the residential area, while on the right is a large industrial zone stretching all the way to the highway and beyond. Here is Munk Pærevej; we cross it in the background, where you can see the light rail garage, workshop, station, train supervision, and more. Parking at Odense Syd is designed for those who prefer not to bring their cars into the city, and free parking is available. We then enter an area where construction is still ongoing—namely, the new Oh in Time hospital. It’s set to become a huge hospital. The stop, Hospital Syd, isn’t operational yet, so from here, nearly 900 meters north, there are educational institutions. The light rail runs beneath the building here, with additional structures to the right. The overhead line isn’t perfectly straight because the power supply might wear out around Sommersted, but with a slight change of direction, it can cover a larger area. There’s also transverse traffic on the track, as many people use bikes to get around.
Now, the trip heads toward Cortex Park, which features student housing and a variety of commercial buildings that are gradually appearing. We’re now approaching a large commercial area with shops of all sizes. Dennes SPS Aleve crosses Odense. The light rail began passenger service on May 28, 2022, stretching from Hjallelse in the southeast to Tarup in the northwest—about 14 kilometers. The trip from Jelse to Tarup, with stops at each station, takes roughly 40 minutes. The train set is nearly 30 meters long, weighing approximately 40 tons, and can accommodate around 200 passengers, including 60 seats. On the left is the Rose Cross Tent.
Rosengårdcentret is named after the rose garden near Ringvejen, which once had a farm and greenhouse. Next is Munkerisvej, also known as Ringvejen, which changes direction at its intersection and runs parallel to the Light Rail towards Nyborgvej. On the right is the Korslkk Package, named after a farm that used to be on the left side of the road. We then reach Nyborvej, which we follow west; here, a track branching allows continuation toward Volsmose without closing the current route. On the left is Østerbæks Vej, and on the right is Ejby Møllevej. Straight ahead, you see Odense Cathedral, also called Sankt Knuds Kirke. Coming from Middelfartvej, you can also see the church straight ahead. To the right is Frederiksgade, crossing Frederiksbroen—the first cast-iron bridge in Denmark. The building on the right is the Korshær Hostel. Then we pass Albanigade; the building further up is Odense Courthouse, and just beyond it is the Albani Breweries. We then reach Odense Å, with the Catholic Sankt Albane Church ahead—the city’s oldest church. Before the church, you can see the descent to the Beking Cellar, which extends all the way to Thomas Btris Skade. To the left is Odense Cathedral, and to the right is Vestre Gade. HC Andersenhaven is nearby, close to HC Andersen's House. Less than 20 years ago, this area was mainly parking lots; now, it’s filled with buildings. Next is Østre Stationsvej; on the left is Nørregade, and on the right is Odense Railway Station Center, which opened in 1995, replacing the old station from 1914 that had become too small. To the left is Kongens Have, and to the right is Musikhuset.By Provins TV - .

The "Christmas Express" in the snow - Odense Light Rail (2023)Two of Odense Letbane's train sets have been foiled so that they now appear as the "Christmas Express". This has happened in connection with a collaborative campaign with Rosengårdcenteret.
The "Christmas Express" ran for the first time on Thursday 30 November, and will run until 23 December. In connection with heavy snow, it was possible to see the "Christmas Express" in the snow, just to make it all a little more Christmassy.
The trains have also been decorated inside. Excellent initiative!

Most viewed - Trams in Odense | New light rail system | Stadler Variobahn (2022)Odense, Denmark's third-largest city, introduced a new light rail system exactly three months ago. The Odense Letbane is the second light rail system built in Denmark in the 21st century and is operated by Stadler Variobahn trams. This episode of Trams in Europe offers an overview of the Odense Letbane, including its history, fleet, lines, fun facts, and future plans, and concludes with footage.

Welcome to the second episode of the Trams in Europe series. Today, we are in Odense, Denmark's third-largest city, to explore its LED bar network. This is one of the newest light rail systems in the world, having opened on May 28, 2022, making it just three months old at the time of this video's release. Or, actually, it could be exactly three months because May 28 is two months away from the current date. As with the previous video, which focused on Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, this time we'll explore the history, fleet, and lines of the Odense network, concluding with some fun facts and plans. So, without further ado, let's get started. The Odense light rail is 14.5 kilometers long and currently stretches from Tørup Center to Dalum. This route is not very direct; it takes a semi-circular path around the city, serving the center along the way, as well as various amenities, including universities, hospitals, IKEA, shops, cinemas, and the central train station. There is also a second station served on the line. Currently, there are no line numbers; instead, the destinations are shown, such as Tørup Center, since there is only one line, and it hasn't been named. It just indicates the terminus, Tørup Center, on one end. Here's some brief information about the light rail in Odense: as you can see, it runs from Tørup Center to Dalum, with 24 stations, which is the main point. A fun fact about Odense's light rail is that it is operated by Stadler Variobahn, the same fleet used in Aarhus and the London Tramway System. Each of the 16 standard rail lines in Odense has its own name. We rode on line 8, which is labeled L81—a tram called 'Adventure.' Each tram has a name, often with a poetic theme, and graphical links associated with it. For example, 'Adventure' is one of these, and although translations can vary, the name tends to evoke a poem or story. In terms of network overview, the entire journey from one end to the other takes approximately 42 minutes, making it a relatively short line. It carries around 200 passengers daily and generates about 35,000 rides per weekday, with an annual ridership of approximately 10-11 million. Since the line is new, much of this data is forecasted.
Here's a timeline of the Odense light rail network: it began in 2011, initially with plans for two intersecting lines forming a 'hat shape.' The first stage, connecting Yasi and Tørup, was built and completed. The second stage is planned for the future and will be discussed shortly. Before proceeding, let's review some of the terminology. One end is the Tørup Center, with the HLC terminus visible as it prepares to turn around. The other end leads to Odense's main shopping center, with a terminus that uses switch tracks for pendulum-style trams, which have carriages on both sides. Different angles show the HLC terminus near a train station, and the other terminus near the shopping center. Here, you can also see the interior of the trams, which are slightly different from those used in nearby systems but share similar specs. They even come with cables to connect additional devices, though they lack USB charging ports; instead, they have long connectors for other uses. You can also see the train station in the background, connecting to the light rail system. Now, back to the timeline. I've shown you some photos of the system, but that's roughly the overview.

Overwhelming light rail start in Odense (2022)After eight years and some billions, you could probably just try a few trips. That's how it sounded when 10-year-old Anders, together with thousands of other Odense residents, attended the opening and free trips of the long-awaited Light rail in Odense.
We were there when the first 2 official light rail trains drove synchronously into Albani Torv, to celebrate the opening of the most controversial construction project in Odense in recent times.
A construction project that has of course had the obligatory delays, lots of construction mess, complaints about nuisances, and local political debate for and against. But even if no one can yet predict how popular the light rail will become, it is set to become a part of the city many years into a future where Odense, like the rest of Denmark and indeed the rest of the world, will have to think about climate-friendly green forms of transport, before global warming and the ongoing climate changes really knock on the door.
You can also watch a local historical look back at the controversy over a disputed highway that divided the city in more ways than one.By Odense ser Rødt - .

Inauguration of Odense Light Rail (2022)Odense light rail was inaugurated on 28 May 2022, and the first train with passengers ran from the station called Parkering Odense Syd, which is located east of Hjallese. The Odense light rail was expected to open at the end of 2020, but the coronavirus and other longer-lasting issues were not in place. In contrast to the Aarhus light rail, the Odense light rail first waited for approval before announcing an opening date. And it must be said that it was a good solution, so that you did not end up with a cancellation at the last minute. In this film, we see clips from the opening day, information about the design, and a bit of history from Odense Sporveje.
Today is May 28, 2022. I am at Hjallese Station, on my way to the Park & Ride facility south of Odense. I won a seat on Odense Letbane's first passenger train, which departs at 10:45 a.m. The trip is non-stop to Tarup, where the mayor and the Minister of Transport will board for the return trip. The first passenger light rail train left from the Odense Syd parking station, east of Hjallese. This station houses the light rail workshop, operated by Keolis, which also manages light rail in Odense and Aarhus. Odense light rail was scheduled to open at the end of 2020, but delays caused by the coronavirus and other long-term approvals pushed back the opening. Unlike Aarhus light rail, Odense waited for approval before announcing an opening date. This proved to be a good decision, preventing last-minute cancellations. At 10:20, the first light rail train in Odense arrived at the platform at the Park & Ride facility, ready to depart with passengers. - I recommend passengers stand up and hold onto the brackets and handrails until they get used to the train's rhythm. On the way to Tarup, I’ll share a little about the design of the new light rail. My name is Janik Frithioff, and I am a graphic designer at Odense Light Rail, where I have worked since 2017, contributing to station and train designs. We're here on train set number 01, named Brunneren. You can see it’s a very bright train with inviting colors, creating a cozy atmosphere, complemented by clear signage. This includes displays and signage along the train. The seats are made of cotton from Kvadrat in Ebeltoft, and the handrails are very visible, painted in subtle colors that won’t pollute the design. Several measures have been taken to make the train appear simple, inviting, and warm. The colors of Odense—sidewalks and buildings—are all warm tones, reflecting the city's palette. The color of our train represents Odense but is intentionally distinct from the cityscape. For blending in, darker colors are used, like the black overhead power poles, whereas the train's light color makes it stand out. We chose green for the emergency door opener—one of the few places in Denmark where this color is used to symbolize an emergency exit, aligning with requirements that emergency signs be green, even though German standards for train construction have red. We investigated and received approval to make it green, which indicates an emergency exit rather than a fire hazard. All communication in our trains and stations is in Danish and English. Our call center has a direct line to stations offering English translation. Signage and announcements are bilingual. The seats are soft and comfortable, unlike the hard seats found in metros or other transit modes. We prioritize quality to give citizens a better experience, even on short trips. We believe in providing high-class public transportation with comfortable seating, smooth rides, and an attractive visual environment. The trains also have large flex spaces for bicycles and strollers. Initially, these spaces were smaller, with a row of seats removed and replaced by foldable seats to increase capacity for bikes, wheelchairs, and prams. Then we arrived in Tarup Center, where many passengers were gathering for the first official train departure. Here, both the mayor and the Minister of Transport boarded for the return trip, with small inauguration ceremonies at each station, where ribbons were cut. At Albani Torv, many people waited for the first two trains arriving simultaneously. - It was fantastic. Lots of happy people. - Silent? - At least, there was only happiness. After that, the last ribbon was cut. And afterward, H.C. Andersen welcomed everyone to the City of Fairy Tales. In ancient fairy tales, the poet writes, "YES!" In millennia, they will come.By Kennys Film - .

Light rail opening in Odense (2022)A few thoughts, feelings, and comments about the Odense Light Rail, which has just opened to the public. What began 15 years ago as an idea with a couple of Christian Democratic parliamentary candidates has now become a reality.
Welcome to the opening of the Odense Light Rail on May 28, 2022 here at Odense Banegård so that the Light Rail does not have to run very far after the departure when there is a fking crossing right after the station Then the trip continues into the city in the direction of Jalles and here a new light rail train arrives at Odense Banegårds Station The entire Light Rail is double-tracked so that you have the opportunity to pass each other all the way There is a switch along the way so that it is also possible in the event of operational disruptions and the like to change tracks Here we are on the final Approach as you can call it to the terminus in tup right next to tup Centeret the station was very popular on this premiere day In general, the trains are a little quieter than the typical city buses and you can however experience a slight undulation so to speak when you drive over a switch as you can typically experience at, for example, than the stations like here The train is equipped with pictograms above the entrances that show where you are supposed to drive in with, for example, a stroller, wheelchair or bicycles they are made like this so that the edges of the rails and the island are stacked in the carriages, they have no immediate difference in level so it is easy to get in and out and here a light rail train arrives at the other end of the light rail, namely at Jals station, by the way. Then they weren't quite so busy giving information at the stations. It took quite a while before information about traffic disruptions and similar matters was received. So I'm on my way out to Jalte station, one of the light rail's main stations, and there are already quite a few people waiting for a little bit of track to come. It's free to ride today and until Constitution Day, so that people can try the beast. Now we need to see what the new light rail station is like. The platform is built adjacent to the platform at Halles station, making it easy to walk from the Svendborg Line or to the Svendborg Line. Here, next to the light rail station, I can see a housing association holding an open house for Seden. Some new housing is being built here, where there is also a coffee shop, crayfish, and balloons for the children. So we spent a little bit for a party day out here that was already quite a few people and were waiting in a hurry but fortunately they didn't just have to stand and wait for the train But could actually also look at the trains on the Svendborg Line next door while the Light Rail was of course in place with small marzipan bread for the travelers TV2 was also present and covered the event inside the train there was live music in some of the trains I think the trains were well visited This day and inside the seats are also indicated with pictograms Which seats are for example fern for walking difficulties pregnant women for Prams wheelchairs bicycles so it is easy for the travelers to find their way around These are the pictograms you see up here on the windows But how was the delay so Well as I said before So they had such a good comfortable ride there is of course just a little Slinger swing when you drive through a switch and island otherwise they actually drive quite nicely and more relaxed than the city bus line otherwise the seats Yes so it is very thinly padded so it is not one you have to sit in for very long another thing where you I can see that this is not a train that is intended for long journeys, despite the fact that the journey from Odense railway station to, for example, the hospital or the university may actually be a little longer. Oh, it's that there were actually no sockets for charging mobile phones and other smart devices, as you see more and more in public transport. I think it might be a good idea to address at least some of the issues with the seats, but they have chosen not to do so in the Odense light rail train. Here, we see a glimpse of the Light Rail near Hjallese.By The Travelling Drone - .

Opening of Odense Light Rail (2022)The film shows glimpses of the light rail's opening day, when the centre, trains, and stations were full of happy people and celebrations. There are also features with several locals who talk about their expectations for the light rail.
Dear everyone, residents of Odense, guests, and visitors... a very warm welcome. It's wonderful to see so many people here on this historic day, which is also a special occasion for the city. As an Odense resident, I find it easier to get around now. Traveling to the outskirts is simpler than by bike or car, and parking is easier too. I enjoy the comfort of being able to sit and relax, and drive instead of getting out of my car or bike. That will be a huge benefit. The light rail provides more flexibility and an easier way to get around Odense. It also gives me more independence from my parents. When I want to go to Rosengårdcentret with my friends, we can take the light rail. I am a student at the university here. The light rail makes traveling so much easier for me. It will feel like a big city. The area around H.C. Andersen's House is fantastic, with its sidewalks and buildings. Think about it — there used to be a four-lane road there! That's crazy. I am proud of Odense and the new light rail.By Odense Letbane - .

CityVext by Odense Light Rail (2021)Søren Storm presents the growth medium CityVext in use at Odense Light Rail. The challenge was to ensure the growth and drainage of excess rainwater in a structure with a height of only 19 cm on top of a solid concrete deck.
We provided Odense Light Rail with the growing medium for their track surface. The goal was to ensure that the grass covering, which was to be used along nearly the entire 14-kilometer track, could thrive and stay green all year. The challenge was that the track surface rests on a cast concrete deck, with a total installation height of about 20 cm. Additionally, the concrete deck extends across the full width of the track. This means water diverted from the surface must flow underneath the track surface, beneath the rails, which are raised roughly 20 mm above the concrete deck and extend outward where the water can seep away. Creating a green grass cover with only 20 cm of soil depth is quite challenging. Usually, we recommend a soil depth of at least 30-40 cm for this purpose. The project was described with a two-layer setup, including a drainage layer at the bottom with sea stones and a sand-mixed soil layer on top. Our solution was to use CityVext, which is made of pumice from Hekla volcano in Iceland. It’s a natural, porous lava rock that absorbs water well. When mixed with organic material, it creates an excellent growth medium that retains a lot of water yet remains highly draining.
The benefits of combining these properties allowed us to move away from the traditional two-layer solution and opt for CityVext in a single layer. For the contractor, this meant laying out one growth medium instead of covering the 14 km track twice. We delivered up to 12,000 m³ of this medium for the project, which involved significant work hours, regardless of whether the area was covered once or twice. Another advantage of the single-layer approach is the low installation height—around 20 cm to the top of the rail, reducing the root volume available for grass growth by 20 cm. This eliminates the need for a drainage layer that consumes half of the already compacted height, which is sufficient for a lush green surface, as seen here. We are standing in a section where the growing medium was laid during winter and spring. Unconventionally, the area was sown in early summer, during a typical Danish summer marked by heat and drought. Under normal conditions, this could have challenged the grass growth, but today we see a fully covered grass surface between the track elements. This demonstrates that the chosen solution works effectively.By BG Byggros A/S - .

For several years, the city has been undergoing construction as part of the development of a 14.5-kilometer-long light rail line. The route goes from Tarup to Hjallese, but time is short and the finish line is fast approaching. 1 July is the cut-off date by which the entire long light rail section must be completed, so that the contractors can hand over the construction to the light rail company. Only then can they conduct the final test runs, ensuring the light rail is ready to receive passengers. But the question is when it will be.By TV 2 Fyn - .

The light rail test runs from Hjallese to the IKEA station (2021)In weeks 5 and 6, the light rail ran for the first time from the operation and maintenance center in Hjallese to IKEA Station on Ørbækvej. It took place at a walking pace and was a so-called "line check", where all conditions on the track and interactions with trains, signals, etc., were checked by a large contingent of personnel. However, the test runs will soon kick into gear when the light rail drivers need to be trained. And later in the spring, the test run will be extended to the entire light rail section.By Odense Letbane - .

Take a virtual tour of the light rail control center (2020)Join us on a virtual tour of Odense Light Rail's control and maintenance center, where you can experience details from both the light rail trains and get inside the control and maintenance center in Hjallese. Managing Director Mogens Hagelskær provides a thorough review of the light rail train, both externally and internally, and discusses the design process itself. Construction manager Søren Thrane provides an in-depth look at various parts of the extensive control and maintenance center, including the workshop hall, wash hall, control room, and office facilities.
Welcome to the tour here at the control center, the facility for controlling and maintaining Odense Light Rail. My name is Mogens Hagelskær, and I am the CEO of Odense Light Rail. I am Søren Thrane, the construction manager at Odense Light Rail. We are standing outside the control and maintenance center, which is the heart of Odense Light Rail, when we begin operations. It is a building just over 8,000 square meters, constructed here over the past few years. Inside, there are already 16 train sets ready to operate on the 14.5-kilometer track. The trains will serve 26 stations along this route, with an expected interval of 7.5 minutes during daytime, and slightly longer gaps during off-peak hours. Today, this location is the core of our light rail system—where trains are maintained, operated in the evenings and nights, and monitored constantly. We will take you on a tour of both inside and outside the train. So, welcome. We are standing here in front of one of our highlights in the project—the train itself. Designing large infrastructure projects involves making sure they match the city they serve. We chose colors and styles that fit Odense and reflect its character. The train features a calm, uniform design. The base color is a creamy white that conveys calmness and a sense of exclusivity, similar to luxury infrastructure. We added a red accent on the top, which is our signature color. The choice of red over blue and green was inspired by Odense’s warm climate—red roofs, yellow sidewalks, and stones—colors that naturally resonate with the city. Inside the train, a quiet, cohesive design welcomes passengers. Look down the length of the train. You'll see a uniform appearance, with the only variation being the red seats, which match the exterior accents—our corporate color—inviting people to sit down comfortably. Further inside, the bars are kept in pure black and white to maintain contrast and clarity. They could have been decorated with colorful LED lights. Still, we chose simplicity to aid visually impaired passengers—who highlighted the importance of high contrast—and to support the overall calm aesthetic. The flex room here replaced extra rows of seats with foldable ones, allowing better capacity during rush hours or busy periods, facilitating easy entry and exit. An additional door enhances passenger flow. The train features an information system with a traditional display showing the current station, along with screens and sound systems that have been removed to keep the environment peaceful. We want riding the train to be a calm, relaxed experience, where passengers can feel comfortable and have respectful conversations. We’ve also worked closely with accessibility groups to optimize contrast for handrails and other features. The entire train design prioritizes accessibility, with no steps inside, allowing free movement throughout. The level platforms enable direct entry and exit at stations, ensuring high accessibility. We’ve also extensively utilized pictograms on windows and doors to assist all passengers.By Odense Letbane - .

This is how the light rail departure screens work (2020)Graphic designer Janik Frithioff from Odense Letbane discusses the functions of the platforms' exit screens, which must ensure high readability and ease of use, particularly for blind users.
We have developed an information system that displays relevant information on a departure screen. On the platform, you can see when the next train is arriving and in which direction. We can also display additional details on the "3rd line" of the departure screen, informing you of any operational irregularities. Regarding user-friendliness, we focus on displaying relevant and accurate information. For this, we use a specially designed font that ensures high readability, especially from a distance. Even from afar, you can see when your train is leaving. Additionally, we use a solar film to maintain readability even under direct sunlight. The departure screens face challenges because they are located at the ends of the platforms and lack a roof, exposing them to weather, wind, and sunlight. On all platforms, alongside an emergency telephone, we have a TTS button—short for text-to-speech. This device helps blind users; they can feel the button and, when pressed, it announces what is shown on the departure screen. This way, they can always know when the light rail will arrive.By Odense Letbane - .

How to make room for a light rail through the city (2020)Before the actual track work started, the city had to be prepared for the light rail. When an eight-meter-wide track needs to connect with the rest of the town, it influences the design of roads, bike paths, and sidewalks, which must then be rebuilt. Construction began in August 2017 and is expected to finish by 2021, when the final asphalt layer is applied to the last roads and bike paths. Project manager Svend Sørensen has overseen this work. Here, he discusses the construction process and how it shifts from a broad, conceptual view to detailed, practical realities. For example, the location of a manhole cover can present different challenges in practice than on paper. The goal is to unify everything into a higher unity, making the city a pleasant place for everyone to live and get around.
My name is Svend Sørensen. I am the project manager for the construction work at Odense Light Rail. That is, the construction outside the actual light rail route. When I explain the construction work to people, I mean the work outside the light rail itself—it includes roads, sidewalks, and cycle paths. It also covers all the nearby roads and residential properties. For example, we have the Rosengårdcentret and IKEA. We have rebuilt the areas around them, and I have been responsible for that. In terms of construction, I was involved in the design phase. There, I served as a liaison between the theoretical plans and the various developers, including the mayor's administration, the municipal road authority, and other relevant parties. My role was to connect these plans to those who were actually carrying out the work. Turning a vision into a buildable project can be a complex process. For instance, if there are existing road wells in the area, they may need to be relocated a few meters, which can result in a 2-3 centimeter level difference, potentially causing puddles to form. It is essential to ensure these puddles are properly drained. From viewing the project from a helicopter to observing the detailed work on the ground, removing these puddles from the roads is an essential step.
Overall, life is exciting and challenging—lots of balls in the air! Odense has a motto that it should be a green city, and we are planting around 1,500 trees in connection with the light rail. Those that we don't have space for along the light rail will be planted elsewhere, such as here on Ørbækvej, as a supplement to the existing trees. Once I finish the actual construction work here, we will have created optimal conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers in the city. For example, we've put a lot of thought into both pedestrians and cyclists. When we put them in their right element—our new sidewalks and bike paths—it will be truly outstanding to get around the city.By Odense Letbane - .

How to drill a 17.5 m long concrete pile into the ground (2020)Odense Light Rail is building a transformer station on Nyborgvej. The ground is soft and moist, so the foundation must be secured with 21 concrete piles. A huge drilling machine has been used for the work - see how it is done here.
We are constructing a transformer station on Nyborgvej. The ground here is soft and moist. Therefore, the foundation must be reinforced with a total of 21 concrete piles. A large drilling machine is used for this work. It drills downward through the soft soil layers. When solid clay appears, the drilling stops. This occurs at about 17.5 meters depth in this location. The drill is then slowly lifted. Simultaneously, free-flowing concrete is pumped into the hole. Once the drill is removed and the hole filled with concrete, iron reinforcement is placed into the concrete. The entire process takes approximately half an hour. The concrete must then set before construction can begin.By Odense Letbane - .

Odense Light Rail
The city in motionBy Henrik Boye, Odense Letbane - .
Construction for more than 15 billion kroner along the light rail (2017)The light rail must attract investment to Odense – just as it has been seen in other light rail cities. More than DKK 15 billion worth of construction is already planned along the light rail, and more will be added. The rails give investors a guarantee that the location will also be attractive in the future. Get an overview of the many buildings here.By Odense Letbane - .
Tine has spoken to Benthe Vestergård from Odense Light Rail (2016)I'm sitting with Bente from Odense Light Rail, and I'd like to learn a bit about what Odense Light Rail is. Bente, what exactly is a light rail? Well, a light rail is a very modern, extremely comfortable train, you could say. It runs on rails through the city. It's designed to cover 14.3 kilometers across the entire city, from Tarup in the northwest to Hjallse in the southeast. So, it's a very comfortable train carriage, you could say, but you ride in it when you take the light rail. Why should Odense have a light rail? That's a question for the politicians. The city council has decided that we should have a light rail, and in addition, the Folketing has also agreed that Odense should get one. The main reasons for their decision relate to the growth happening in Odense—that is, more people are moving here in the coming years. Many more work in Odense, and people also commute from Aarhus and Copenhagen.
Regarding the source of this growth, it appears that the need for easy and quick travel is the primary driver. The most important routes are between the Central Station and the areas around the university and the new super hospital that will be built on the Campus, south of Bilka and IKEA, where many people will go. It’s estimated that in 2024, around 60,000 people will travel in and out of that area every day—more than the population of Svendborg Municipality, where I currently live. That’s a huge number, so many people cannot be transported solely by cars and buses. That’s why the plan is: Odense should also have a light rail. A light rail can carry as many passengers as four buses or 208 cars. The Light Rail will mostly replace city buses where it runs, but it will not entirely replace them.
Instead, buses will still operate in other parts of Odense and the suburbs, with schedules coordinated so that passengers can easily switch between buses and the Light Rail. As for the cost, we don't know yet; it’s something the politicians will decide later. But it is expected to cost the same as a bus ticket, so it’s comparable to other public transport fares. The route will run from Tarup, near the Tarup Center, down Rismarksvej, then into Højstrupvej, past Idrætsparken, along Stadionvej to Middelfartsvej, into Middelfartsvej, past Vestre Stationsvej, Østre Stationsvej, near the train station, then down Thomas Petricek Street, through the new Quarter, and from there only pedestrians and cyclists will pass through to Benedikts Plads. It will continue out to Nyborgvej, then down to Ørbækvej, from Niels Bors Allé, reaching the university and the new hospital under construction, and finally out to Jalse Station. The entire route is 14.3 kilometers long. The Light Rail is planned to run every ten minutes, so it’s very convenient—you don't need a timetable like with buses. When you arrive at one of the 26 stations, a train will be there shortly.
Current estimates suggest around 35,000 passengers will use it daily at first, but this number is expected to grow over the years. As with any new transportation system, people will try it out, see if it meets their needs, and gradually more will start to use it. Experience from BN, which is very similar to Odense, shows they started with 35,000 daily and, after five months, had climbed to 50,000. We expect similar growth here. Regarding accessibility for the disabled, several measures ensure ease of use. The platforms are designed for smooth access—level with the train—making it easy for wheelchair users. Tactile tiles will be placed to help the visually impaired find entrances and exits. Also, the entire boarding process will be level, with no steps or barriers, allowing wheelchair users to get on and off easily. So, I'll be heading up this island over the next while to establish what we call an accessibility group, which includes elderly, disabled people walking, cycling, people with strollers, tourists, whom we ask, 'What do you expect from it? What are your points of attention? What do you want from the Light Rail?' Then we try to find out if it’s something we can incorporate into its design, as much as is now possible. When is the Light Rail expected to open? By the end of 2020, we say, during 2020. You can't rule out that we'll be finished by 2024. Still, that’s the plan, similar to that. Building a light rail is a tremendous job, so an exact date is uncertain. But that sounds good. Thank you. You're welcome. It was a pleasure.By Rytterposten - Rytterkasernens Mediehus - .

Three commuters in the future Odense Light Rail (2014)Take a trip with different types of commuters in future Odense.
Dorthe is a commuter. She works as a nurse at Odense University Hospital and lives in Ejby on the Island of Funen. She takes the train to and from Odense every day. When Dorthe arrives at the train station, she lines up to wait for the light rail. The information screen at the station shows the time until the next train arrives. There is a train every ten minutes, so Dorthe rarely waits more than a few minutes. The light rail train arrives, and Dorthe boards along with many other passengers coming from the east and west. It is one of the busiest stops. Many people are getting on and off here. Meanwhile, Dorthe's colleague Katja is driving from Asslev south of Odense. Katja parks her car at the large park-and-ride facility near the motorway and takes the light rail for the last stretch to OUH. Then she has time to look for a parking space. The traffic lights are synchronized with the light rail, making the trip comfortable and reliable. Dorthe uses the time to read and check her phone. On Ørbækvej, a wheelchair user accompanies her. The low-floor design of the light rail makes boarding easy, and people are quick to give way. At the university stops, many students get off, and some also disembark at the hospital with Dorthe. Here, only a moment passes before the train from the park-and-ride arrives, full of passengers. One of them is Katja. The two colleagues head toward the department.By Odense Letbane - .
