The Capital City Light Rail is inaugurated (2025)On Sunday, October 26, 2025, the Capital City Light Rail was inaugurated at 10:30 a.m. The inauguration train started in Ishøj, where the mayor gave a speech and then cut the ribbon. The inauguration train then continued to Rødovre Nord, where ribbons were also cut by the various mayors on the route. The Capital City Light Rail extends from Ishøj in the south and has so far been opened to Rødovre Nord. The rest of the route towards Lundtofte will not open until the summer of next year. The capital's light rail in traffic (2024)Driving along the capital's light rail isn't very complicated. Follow the light regulations, and we will all pass through traffic safely. At the same time, efforts have been made to reduce the interruption of crossing traffic caused by the light rail train. The capital's light rail has 29 stations between Ishøj and Lundtofte, with trains arriving every five minutes during the day, every 10 minutes in the evenings, and on Sundays. There are 63 traffic lights along the route, so light rail trains should ideally encounter green lights as often as possible to stay on schedule. A very advanced and intelligent signaling system at the traffic lights ensures this. The system is aware of the trains' locations on the route and the time it takes for them to pass through an intersection. It also monitors the rest of the traffic using radars and video. The system uses this information to adjust the green lights, ensuring that as much traffic as possible clears before the light rail train arrives at an intersection, and thus often receives a green light. This allows light rail trains to frequently receive the green light before reaching the intersection, letting them proceed without slowing down. However, in some cases, light rail trains will stop at a red signal. When this happens, crossing traffic continues to have a green light before the train can get a new green and proceed. How this works in practice depends on whether the train is driving on the side of the road or in the middle, or if it is changing sides at an intersection. When the train is on the side of the road, there will be a green light for cars and bicycles going straight ahead, even if other vehicles are turning across the train’s path and are on red. When the train is in the middle of the road, both straight-going traffic and vehicles turning right from the same direction will have a green light. If the train changes sides at an intersection, only the train moves while other traffic waits. There will always be traffic signals indicating whether it is your turn or the light rail’s turn to go. This system ensures the safety of all road users as they pass through intersections on the light rail route. When the light rail reaches an intersection, its green light period ends, and crossing traffic resumes. This way, everyone can cross quickly and safely. Our contractors, Siemens and Aarsleff Rail, are currently building a scaled-down version of the large ramp that will lead to the future light rail station at Glostrup. As you can see in the video, the turnouts are delivered "whole" - and not in parts that must subsequently be welded together. This is because switch tracks must be made to millimeter accuracy, as they contain several moving parts that help the train turn up and down the ramp. You can compare the switching tracks to a car engine. When you buy a car, the engine does not come in parts. It is also completely assembled at the factory. From the bridge on Søndre Ringvej, the light rail train will be taken all the way down to the station via a long ramp, so that you can easily and quickly change between light rail, S-train and buses. As I said, it is no easy task to build a ramp of that caliber, but now the work is finally finished, and Per Aarsleff's drone operator, Per Hansen, has documented it in the most beautiful way. This is how we lay concrete sleepers (2022)Rails, sleepers, shards! There are many components to keep track of when the rails for Hovedstadens Light Rail need to be in place. Laying down traces is a multi-part process. First, rails are laid, then sleepers are pushed in underneath, and finally ballast (granite shards) is filled into the track, which is adjusted with a special machine that packs the shards around the sleepers so that the track lies solidly. In the video below, you can see what it looks like when our contractor, Aarsleff Rail As, pushes sleepers under the track. It looks cool! The light rail will have two tracks, but one track will be completed in the part of the stretch that is being worked on, so that it can later be used as a working track for heavy machinery that runs on rails, while the other track is being laid.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .
