Round trip with railcar 917 - Friends of the Bremen Trams (2022)Take a trip in style on a historic tram to the tram museum in Sebaldsbrück. Line 9 connects the main station and Domsheide with Sebaldsbrück on the days the tram museum is open.
The Tw 917 was part of a series of 28 railcars and 28 identical trailers that were the first articulated railcars to be added to the BSAG fleet in 1955. The aim was to create greater capacity in the individual cars and thus save a conductor compared to the previous three-car trains. Since a series of two-axle vehicles was being delivered while the new trains were being developed, it was decided to continue using parts of these cars that were under construction and to develop a two-axle vehicle with a single-axle trailer. While the front parts were manufactured in-house by BSAG, the trailers came from Hansa-Waggonbau GmbH in Bremen. The vehicles quickly earned the nickname "farm wagons" due to their poor running characteristics. For this reason, the company also avoided having to build seven more trains that had actually been planned.
Tw 917 was added to the fleet in 1957 and was used on line 4. After this line was shortened in 1967, however, it was almost always used alone, and from 1970 under the new number 846. In that year it was also prepared for conductorless operation. After line 4 was closed in May 1972, the last trips for which the car was still needed were the use of replacement cars. After all cars of this type had been retired at the beginning of 1977, the 846 was given a special task. It became Bremen's first party train. Its success was so great that in 1980 it was decided to use the short-articulated car 442 for this purpose. Tw 846 had finally served its purpose and was parked in Sebaldsbrück as a non-operational museum vehicle. During the asbestos disposal of the Hansa cars in the early 1990s, this vehicle was also freed from its legacy.
It was kept in the Sebaldsbrück depot as a reserve for later refurbishment until August 2001 and was then towed to the service workshop in Neustadt. Here, the refurbishment was carried out by BSAG employees and apprentices from various departments, as well as former employees of BSAG and the FdBS.
Without numerous donations, the refurbishment of this unique railcar would have been impossible.
On December 6, 2002, it made its first official appearance at the opening of the extension of line 4 to Borgfeld. Since then, the car has been available for museum use.By Willy Kaemena - .

New Bremen tram "Nordlicht" - Interview with BSAG board spokesman Hajo Müller (2020)The time has almost come: the first new trams will start operating in mid-September 2020. In an interview, BSAG board spokesman Hajo Müller reveals what makes the new tram so much better and what is planned for the opening.
Hello Mr. Müller, we have already seen the tram today. I also had the chance to take a quick look inside. For everyone else, what is new about the new tram? Yes, there's a lot to learn about it. First, it is more spacious. Since it is 35 centimeters wider than the old trams, and twice as wide as the 65 230, it has significantly more volume. It's also more comfortable because it is barrier-free. It offers more usable space for hand carts, wheelchair users, walkers, and other mobility aids. That is a significant comfort feature.
Additionally, there are other comfort features. It has air conditioning, which we are noticing right now, and that's a big advantage. Thanks to the lowered windows, it offers a much better view of the outside, allowing you to see and recognize more of the beautiful Bremen while traveling by tram. There are many benefits, including more built-in assistance systems, better acceleration, and improved braking performance. This technology not only increases safety but also enhances passenger comfort. It also has the significant advantage of seven doors instead of five, making it much easier to change passengers at stops through a single exit point. Especially during the COVID-19 period, this is essential, as it prevents people from running into each other at the doors and allows more even distribution of passengers. As already mentioned, the keyword is COVID. Now, you need to present the tram differently—you can't invite everyone to get on and move around freely.
What is planned for the opening ceremony? Yes, we regret that we cannot introduce the train to everyone who is gathering for it. But I think we have found an excellent alternative. It is a live stream scheduled for August 30th at 8 p.m. The event will start with a 90-minute entertainment program featuring celebrities from Bremen. Following that, there will be a presentation on the history of historic vehicles, new vehicles, and the introduction of the new Bremen tram. Henning Scherf mentioned that Flo Mega has confirmed, among other things, that many requests are still under consideration, so from our point of view, this will be an interesting alternative, allowing more people to enjoy it regardless of their location—if they have an internet connection, a smartphone is usually enough to watch the live stream anywhere they like. They can also view it later, as it doesn’t have to be watched live. For those interested, on the 8th at 8:30 p.m., local public transport will begin operation with the new trams. They are not yet in passenger service; that will start about 14 days later, in mid-September. As there are still some tasks to complete, Siemens and its partners are working to finish the process, which is quite complex, involving the technical supervisory authority and TÜV. Once completed, we expect that by mid-September, at least two trams will be operational, with more following soon after. Our goal is to have up to 15 vehicles running by the end of this year. In total, 77 new trams are planned to be in service by 2023. The entire process takes about 14 days per vehicle, including all acceptance procedures. Since two new lines are launching initially, we can't specify exact routes or stop locations yet. All lines are currently operational, mainly because some technical inspections are still underway. Even after passenger service starts, the inspections are ongoing. This two-axle wooden railcar was restored largely true to its original condition using historical photographs.
