A new era began for the Zurich Municipal Tramway (StStZ): In 1929, SWS and MFO delivered the first four-axle prototype, Ce 4/4 301, which was soon nicknamed the "Elephant" due to its compact appearance. Initially, it differed in some respects from the 301-305 series, lacking air brakes and a transparent body. The characteristic pantograph with a contact strip also followed later.
