Strausberger Eisenbahn - Strausberg Tram (2012)

Strausberger Eisenbahn - Strausberg Tram (2012)A visit to Strausberg and it's railway - or tram? Often it is asked if this is a railway or tram system. While originally founded as a railway the mixed service of trains and trams ended in 2005 with the removal of the tracks connecting DB network and the STE with each other. Since 2006 it is by law only a tram so I nowadays it can't be called a railway anymore. The freight train tracks were removed, some remains are still there, see the pics and the end of the video. The freight train locos were given to the Buckower Kleinbahn. The station buildings are from the first years of railway service. The whole line is single-track with a passing loop at Hegermühle. In service are three Tatra KT8D5 trams which were bought in 1995 from Kosice. In 2003 a Tatra T6C5 car was bought which was a former test car for New Orleans. It is only in service at weekends or at non-busy periods. New low-floor trams are ordered and will come intro service in 2013. They are Bombarder Flexity trams and the same type like the short bi-directional cars from Berlin. One of them was tested at the end of 2010 - with success. The tram can be reached at station Strausberg served by S-Bahn Berlin and the NEB railway company. It is in the C fare zone of Berlin so these tickets can be used here. On weekdays it is in service every 20 minutes, on weekends only every 40 minutes.By Klingl3r - .
