The capital's light rail in traffic (2024)Driving along the capital's light rail isn't very complicated. Follow the light regulations, and we will all pass through traffic safely. At the same time, efforts have been made to reduce the interruption of crossing traffic caused by the light rail train.
The capital's light rail has 29 stations between Ishøj and Lundtofte, with trains arriving every five minutes during the day, every 10 minutes in the evenings, and on Sundays. There are 63 traffic lights along the route, so light rail trains should ideally encounter green lights as often as possible to stay on schedule. A very advanced and intelligent signaling system at the traffic lights ensures this. The system is aware of the trains' locations on the route and the time it takes for them to pass through an intersection. It also monitors the rest of the traffic using radars and video. The system uses this information to adjust the green lights, ensuring that as much traffic as possible clears before the light rail train arrives at an intersection, and thus often receives a green light. This allows light rail trains to frequently receive the green light before reaching the intersection, letting them proceed without slowing down.
However, in some cases, light rail trains will stop at a red signal. When this happens, crossing traffic continues to have a green light before the train can get a new green and proceed. How this works in practice depends on whether the train is driving on the side of the road or in the middle, or if it is changing sides at an intersection. When the train is on the side of the road, there will be a green light for cars and bicycles going straight ahead, even if other vehicles are turning across the train’s path and are on red. When the train is in the middle of the road, both straight-going traffic and vehicles turning right from the same direction will have a green light. If the train changes sides at an intersection, only the train moves while other traffic waits. There will always be traffic signals indicating whether it is your turn or the light rail’s turn to go. This system ensures the safety of all road users as they pass through intersections on the light rail route. When the light rail reaches an intersection, its green light period ends, and crossing traffic resumes. This way, everyone can cross quickly and safely. Light rail train at the Control and Maintenance Center (2023)After a drive of almost 800 kilometers and a ferry trip from Germany, the first light rail train arrived in style on Thursday, August 24. Rolled off the truck and onto the rails at the light rail control and maintenance center. The light rail train has everything to itself for a while: 2 kilometers of rails, a waiting workshop, and a large light rail wash. But soon another 28 light rails will follow. Switches in place at the ramp to Glostrup Station (2023)Do you remember our "Diamond" at the Control and Maintenance Centre?
Our contractors, Siemens and Aarsleff Rail, are currently building a scaled-down version of the large ramp that will lead to the future light rail station at Glostrup.
As you can see in the video, the turnouts are delivered "whole" - and not in parts that must subsequently be welded together. This is because switch tracks must be made to millimeter accuracy, as they contain several moving parts that help the train turn up and down the ramp. You can compare the switching tracks to a car engine. When you buy a car, the engine does not come in parts. It is also completely assembled at the factory.
The tracks laid on the straight sections of the route also require precision, of course, but they are easier to lay by eye because they do not consist of moving components.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

Apprentices on the Light Rail - Malek Maarouf Hassing Hansen (2022)It is already difficult to find apprentices for the construction industry. According to the Danish Regions' forecast, there will be a shortage of approximately 70,000 skilled workers in 2025, which could have major consequences not only for the light rail project but also for the rest of Danish society.
The Capital City Light Rail is therefore hoping that an increased focus on the opportunities offered by vocational training can help attract more young people to the construction industry. Meet 19-year-old Malek Maarouf, who is an apprentice with Per Aarsleff and is helping to build the upcoming light rail between Lundtofte and Ishøj.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

New equipment for the Control and Maintenance Centre (2022)In these weeks, Siemens and Aarsleff Rail As are in the process of building and installing a so-called hydraulic lifting street and a huge roof platform for the maintenance of the future light rail trains – equipment that is absolutely vital for the light rail operation.
The work platform, located above the workshop trench, will facilitate access for the light rail operator, Metro Service, to the equipment placed on top of the light rail trains. And the hydraulic liftgate will make it easier for the operator to access the train's undercarriage from below 🛠️
In the video, you can hear our Site Manager, Filip Dichmann, tell more about the ongoing work in the workshop.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

A trip down the ramp to Glostrup Station (2022)On its trip between Ishøj and Lundtofte, the light rail will stop at a total of six S-train stations, including Glostrup Station, which has required an extraordinary amount of construction work. From the bridge on Søndre Ringvej, the light rail train will be taken all the way down to the station via a long ramp, so that you can easily and quickly change between light rail, S-train and buses.
As I said, it is no easy task to build a ramp of that caliber, but now the work is finally finished, and Per Aarsleff's drone operator, Per Hansen, has documented it in the most beautiful way.
In the video you can e.g. see how Per Aarsleff has made the foundations for the future traffic flow masts, built the light rail alignment on the Ringvejsbroen and on the ramp, where shards have also been laid for the light rail's future tracks. And at the end of the ramp at Glostrup Station you can see that elements have also been built for the future light rail platforms.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

This is how we lay concrete sleepers (2022)Rails, sleepers, shards! There are many components to keep track of when the rails for Hovedstadens Light Rail need to be in place. Laying down traces is a multi-part process.
First, rails are laid, then sleepers are pushed in underneath, and finally ballast (granite shards) is filled into the track, which is adjusted with a special machine that packs the shards around the sleepers so that the track lies solidly.
In the video below, you can see what it looks like when our contractor, Aarsleff Rail As, pushes sleepers under the track. It looks cool!
The light rail will have two tracks, but one track will be completed in the part of the stretch that is being worked on, so that it can later be used as a working track for heavy machinery that runs on rails, while the other track is being laid.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

Visit to Glostrup Ejby Station (2021)Glostrup Ejby Station is the first station of a total of 29 light rail stations to be completed. The station is an experimental model for how the rest of the stations should be designed. It is an advantage to have a prototype in place as soon as possible, so that we know how the stations will play together with the rest of the area.

Topping-out ceremony at the light rail control and maintenance center (2020)The light rail owners faced a bit of a test of cooperation when, on Tuesday, June 30, they jointly hoisted a wreath weighing a whopping 40 kilos at the light rail's upcoming control and maintenance center.
The wreath was part of the traveling party that we could hold for the employees who are building the center, and not least a symbol that we have now reached another important milestone in the light rail construction.
It is from the control and maintenance center that the overall operation of the light rail will be controlled when the light rail rolls out on its first trip in 2025.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .

What are we building at Glostrup Station? (2020)At Glostrup Station, new bridges will be built over the railway tracks. To make this possible, extensive preparatory work will be required before the bridges can be installed in 2021.
Another central part of the work involves compensating for the height difference from the Ring Road up to the station using a pre-loading system (actually a large sand cushion), which will last about a year, so that the light rail can run up and down without problems.By Hovedstadens Letbane - .
