Added The British Columbia Electric Railway Company (2025)Transit riders, young and old, gather to hear a tale now seldom told about BC's old electric rail. There was a time when you could ride the finest streetcars in the fleet from Chillak to Hastings Street, shop at Hudson's Bay, and travel back to Chillak before the sun went down. But the railway didn't carry just people when it was built eastward from Vancouver Shore. It brought electric power where there had been none before. For 60 years, the trains went by, as much a part of life's routine as any forest-green scene this logging town had ever seen. But when the 1950s came, rails-to-rubber was proclaimed the future of our city streets. The streetcars just could not compete. They were beautiful but obsolete, so we got on board the bus. The streetcar thus became redundant, pulled into its terminus, with progress once again triumphant. So when you ride a trolley bus, electric-powered just the same, take a moment to look back along the track from whence it came. If you're looking closely, you'll see a vestige of your history. For now, you know the lonely tale of BC's old electric rail. Produced by Andrew Muir for the Knowledge Network. Narrated by John Sprung.
