"In 1879 the Burton Corporation considered the possibility of running horse-drawn omnibuses/trams in the borough. They rejected applications for other proposals and finally decided to implement their own tram system in 1903. A total of eight and a half miles of track and overhead wires were laid in preparation for the first tram. The work shown below on Station Street, close to the High Street junction, gives an idea of the level of workforce employed."
