This is the only double-track cable car crossing in the world, on Nob Hill. The California cable line opened i 1878; the Powell lines ten years later. Because cars on both lines were climbing hills and couldn't see the intersection until they were in it, a tower was installed to signal cable cars when it was safe to proceed. This tower was installed in 1907 and renovated with Market Street Railway's help in 2021

The California Street Cable Railroad Company operated these small 2dummy and trailer" two-car cable trains until the early 1890s, when they pioneered the double-end open-and-closed section combination cars of the type widely copied as streetcar bodies, and still seen on California Street as cable cars today.
