🇲🇽 Mexico City Light Rail | Tren Ligero (2024)The Mexico City light rail (Tren Ligero) is a 13 kilometer light rail line which was originally built as a streetcar. This line was opened as a light rail line in 1986 however operated as a streetcar line part of the Mexico City Streetcar system before the conversion. The line has gone through many conditions being most recently neglected in the 2010s before the recent renovations to the line. The line went through a complete renovation throughout 2019 to 2021 upgrading the rails so trains can reach higher speeds. The rolling stock has also evolved with 5 different types of trains running currently on the line. The first of the newest TE 23 trains was acquired in 2023 and put into service on the 3rd of January 2024. All older trains were repainted when the renovation was complete having a blue and black livery corresponding to the Transportes Electricos logo. Each of the 8 other new trains are planned to be delivered and inaugurated throughout the next year or two enhancing capacity and frequency on the heavily saturated line. The fare can be paid with the Movilidad Integrada transport card and costs $3 Mexican pesos per ride making it the cheapest form of public transport in the city. The line is an amazing way to get around the south end of the city and if you ever need to use it I fully recommend it.
