Marseille: The Northern tramway, a major issue for the city and its inhabitants (2023)On February 7, 2023, the first sleepers for the future northern tramway of Marseille, the T3, were installed in the Crottes district, which is undergoing a complete transformation as part of the Euroméditerranée national interest project—a first phase involving the installation of 1.8 km of tracks between Arenc and Capitaine Gèze. Economically, I believe that in 50 years, this city will have two tram lines, one metro line, and a tramway island. I think a fundamental change is about to happen today, even if it only takes effect by July 2023. With the arrival of the new metro train, it won’t be fully operational yet. However, we will still be able to use it, and it is a beautiful metro train we recently saw in Valenciennes, scheduled to arrive in July. The work that has begun is progressing well, and it’s important to regularly report on this route, which is well laid out, running north and south. It’s beneficial for businesses, residents, and everyone to have this Ferré, which will connect points and link with SNCF stations—enabling people to leave the city and enter other areas. I believe it’s essential that elected officials, both those in the spotlight and regional and state leaders who helped fund the project, are present to see that progress continues. We are here to oversee time and ensure deadlines are met. We are nearly at the transition between the Euromédiaire year 1 and the Euroméditerranée year 2, so perimeter one has already seen the tramway delivered. Today, the focus is on extending northward and developing the whole urban project. The Smartsak block has been built, along with the Fabriques block and the future urban park. At the former Cannet station, we will connect to Captain Jays, then move further north. This is at the heart of a significant development project for the city and metropolitan area, which makes sense because it’s interconnected by a tramway line connecting the metro, the TER line, and the redevelopment of public spaces—creating large areas for pedestrians and bike paths. We now have a range of alternative solutions to cars, with projects unfolding continuously. Near the footbridge, two blocks will be built for offices and housing. A bit further away, a private college and the digital campus platform, which will host thousands of students, will be located. Further north, the Factory district will develop 250,000 m², including offices, public facilities, housing, and economic activity. Beyond Captain Jays, the Théodora project and others are planned because, where public transport develops, businesses, housing, and economic activities come together. This allows residents and users to move around easily. We need efficient movement between districts in northern Marseille and to the city center. It’s vital that employees can get around easily and that companies are more accessible to job seekers. Approximately 80,500 people work in the Golden Districts, and with the coastal area's borders, the total number of commuters is roughly 110,000 people daily. Of course, making travel easier is essential for the residents and businesses of Marseille. The economic sector strongly desires to improve travel options, especially between the 16th and 14th districts, and between the 14th and 15th districts. We must be vigilant in ensuring all activity zones are accessible and connected by major routes. The André Roussin activity zone is crucial for our core work because many companies are based there. Serving this area quickly is essential, and we also want to include as many residents as possible, allowing them to move around easily—focusing on both speed and accessibility. The initial target is 2025, with the second phase set for 2028. Our goal is to provide the most precise and robust transit options for our businesses, enabling them to recruit more easily and making Marseille Nord the most attractive and sought-after metropolitan hub.By Ecomnews - .
