Ilevia - the tram system of Lille in France (2022)The next time I visit Lille, I must make an effort to find the tram platform at Gare Lille Europe. In November 2004, when I visited the first time, I had a difficult time going from the metro platform to the tram platform (I guess I could not find the way or did not understand the Correspondence signs back then), as I had to return to Brussels, where I was staying, departing Lille Europe about 2 PM. Hopefully, in 2023, I will have the opportunity to return to Lille, as well as visit Charleroi and Antwerp.By Rail Public Transport 🏳️‍🌈 - .

Tramway de Lille - Roubaix - Tourcoing (2012)It is a rapid journey between Roubaix, Lille, and Tourcoing. I often take it to go to Roubaix and Lille, and frankly, I am not disappointed. I'm captivated by the shape and interior of the trains. The first-generation Irisbus-style square headlights are legendary, and it's a shame about that weird thing in front.By Funimag - .

Lille Trams Mongy (2010)

Lille Trams Mongy (2010)See the tram from Lille to Tourcoing. Lille tramway is a tramway system located around the city of Lille, France. It is often called the Mongy, after Alfred Mongy, the engineer who created the interurban lines that make up the current system. The current tram system consists of two interurban tram lines, connecting central Lille to the nearby communities of Roubaix and Tourcoing, and has 45 stops. The lines were built at the same time as the boulevards linking Lille to its two neighbours, and the lines run on reserved track within the boulevards for most of their length. The first tram line in Lille was built 1874, and the electrification of the town system started in 1897. The current interurban lines were built in 1909. While most urban lines in Lille were abandoned after 1950, the Mongy remained in service as the backbone of the public transport network of the TCC, the predecessor of Transpole. Whilst the expansion of the Metro initially threatened the trams, they were kept in service. The line originally terminated in the street outside the Opera House in Lille, but was diverted into a tunnel and underground terminus at the Gare de Lille-Flandres, thus offering interchange with both lines of the Metro. The line was renovated between 1991 and 1994, and new low floor trams were provided. The lines are built to metre gauge and are electrifed at 750 volts DC. The tram system is operated by Transpole, the public transport operator for the Lille Métropole. Transpole also operates the Lille metro (a two line underground and elevated VAL system) and 68 urban bus routes, all of which share a common ticketing system. Improved bus fleets providing quicker and cheaper urban public transport also affected France's tram lines and for a while. Apart from three surviving fragments -- Lille, Marseilles and St Etienne -- France seemed finished with light rail.By NODDING CAT CHANNEL - .

Book: Lille tram line T with railcar 511, the back Tourcoing (1995)Book: Lille tram line T with railcar 511, the back Tourcoing (1995)The Mongy, Northern Tramway. Lille - Roubaix - Tourcoing. For the people of northern France, the Mongy is much more than just a tram: it's a character in its own right, having been a part of life in this major city for 85 years. Tram enthusiasts, for their part, will see the Lille - Roubaix - Tourcoing Electric Tramway (ELRT) as one of the three networks that survived the rise of the bus in the post-war years. But in this book, both groups will learn that the Mongy was first and foremost the central element of an unprecedented urban planning project that gave birth to the grand boulevards. Closer to our time, in 1950, the famous 500 series trams propelled the network to the rank of the most modern and fastest tramway in France. These superlatives, once challenged by the high level of technology in the newly built tram networks in other cities since 1985, are now being reclaimed: since last autumn, a fully modernized Mongy tram has been running along the boulevards, with its superb articulated Breda trams. In this book, Gérard Blondeau, a tram enthusiast from birth and a lifelong resident of Lille, recounts the history of the Mongy in great detail... ...The most modern of the "classic" trams!By Henrik Boye, La Régordane - .
