Gothenburg's New Tram-M34 (2025)So, welcome to Gothenburg's new tram. I'm standing here in the 45-meter-long M34, and now you're going to get a tour. Okay, and this is not a bad tram. It was released just a week ago and has been in service since September 2021. It's 45 meters long and currently only operates on line 11. Gothenburg's trams have had issues with their aging vehicles; they ordered M33s not too long ago, but now they've taken it to a whole new level with the M34s. I'm going to show you some advantages and maybe some disadvantages of these trains. We'll start with the advantages, and there are several: seats and USB chargers, which are well-designed and convenient, as well as nice stop buttons. I'll also highlight the best advantage. We have not only one, not just two, not three, not four, but five pram spaces. Plus, there are no steps inside the train, which is a significant advantage. You can also bring a wheelchair, as indicated by the orange-marked door, which is now closing. This is how you can access and sit in a wheelchair. This space is reserved for wheelchairs, making public transportation more accessible to everyone. Something good about these models, unlike others, is that there are no steps—just a slight ground elevation near the wheels, but it's hardly noticeable. The trams now in service are the M34, a more powerful vehicle with a significantly larger capacity. As I mentioned, it currently only runs on line 11 because it's so long—45 meters—compared to the M33, which is only 32 meters. That's a significant difference, so there's a reason they don't run on all lines—they don't have enough space at some stops. For safety reasons, it will only operate on designated routes. Now, we’re departing from Saltholmen on this tram, and as you hear, there’s no creaking or unusual noise. It makes a little sound, but that’s typical of a tram. It’s clear. Sixty of these cars have been ordered, so approximately 60 trams will be circulating the city, using the same ticket system and other features. They’re much longer and more comfortable, with better seats. I'd do a quick test—how long does it take me to run through the tram? I’ll start the clock now. Running through, running through—good when there are no passengers. Running through, and here we are. Noted. They also have garbage cans onboard at every door. I'm not sure if that’s new, but it’s there. It also seems like they've introduced a new seat design. I’m not entirely sure what it is — it looks like they started making a design with flashes, but didn't finish. I do like the black and grey seats; they look spotless and neat. At the back, there's a small window to look out. Overall, I think the environment inside this tram is very welcoming. It’s clean and tidy, and I’d definitely be happy to see this if I lived in Gothenburg. Now you know: the M34 is currently running on line 11, but it will soon be deployed on almost all lines in Gothenburg by the end of 2025. It’s 45 meters long, has a ramp, garbage cans, new seats, charging sockets, and is just a better tram. Thanks for watching. Have a good day, and goodbye.By Sam H - January 25, 2025.
