Trams in Wrocław, Poland, Part I (2014)This is the first episode of a series featuring the tram system of Wrocław in Poland. Wrocław is the 4th largest city of Poland. Its extensive tram network has a track length of 84km which is served by 20 lines, resulting in a total of 250km line length. It is quite dense. Around the downtown area, there are tram tracks almost everywhere, and they reach quite far into the outskirts on some lines. The majority of the fleet consists of Konstal 105Na vehicles and their modernized pendants Konstal Protram 105NWr. However, there are also some low floor vehicles, namely Protram WrAs 204 and 205, and also some newer Škoda 16T and 19T articulated trams. The first part of this series focuses on the downtown area. The film starts at Galeria Dominikańska, which is a quite busy intersection. We then head north toward Hala Targowa, where there are some nice bridges over the Odra river. The film then shows several scenes around Rynek (a quite busy station) and the single-track line that runs through the city centre, before we go to Plac Bema (another busy intersection). We then follow the tracks toward Plac Grunwaldzki (yet another busy intersection), where the first part concludes. Tram Plus was running around Wrocław (2011)Tram Plus made its first run around Wrocław, with tram drivers learning how to operate the machine from specialists from the Czech Republic. We have recently purchased and are beginning to receive new 19-ton stairs. In total, there will be 31 of them. Currently, we have two such vehicles. The Skoda 19-ton is slightly different from the one we have been using so far. It has doors on both sides because the route it is intended for does not have a typical loop, i.e., a passenger tram. The exterior appearance of the tram is very similar to the previous one. The Porsche has been preserved, but the most important thing for passengers is that it is now air-conditioned. Not only will it be air-conditioned, but it will also have air conditioning. A monitoring system has not yet been installed. I hope it will not only protect us from vandals but also assist passengers in cases of robberies or thefts. Additionally, a completely new feature, previously unused in MPK, is ceiling-mounted monitors that will be used to provide information to passengers. We will be able to display essential information on them. Changes, for example, will include city information. Perhaps in the future, we will also use them for advertising purposes, which will likely please our cyclists. This tram features a special designated area. According to bicycle regulations, it is comfortable, and I hope cyclists will use it, unlike the previous ones, where we repeatedly encountered criticism that sitting sideways and looking directly into another passenger’s eyes is neither comfortable nor pleasant. Therefore, at our request, Skoda Transportation changed the seating arrangement at the front and rear of the carriage. There are no longer sideways benches facing the direction of travel, only standard seats. A new interior color scheme has been implemented, and we have a completely different seat upholstery. I hope all our passengers will find it very appealing. This is the logo of Wrocław, a letter characteristic of our city. There are also embroidered pictograms on the seats indicating special seating for mothers with children and disabled persons.
