History - Brandklipparen
Lund is, in a sense, the oldest city in the Nordic countries. Lund itself is over 1,000 years old, and it is also the richest and longest-lasting Iron Age settlement. It is estimated to have been seven times as large as Birka in the Mälardalen valley. In practice, Lund has been the capital of both Denmark and Sweden at various times.
The carriage you are now traveling in is named after Brandklipparen, King Charles XII's legendary horse. Between 1716 and 1718, Charles XII ruled his kingdom from his headquarters in Lund. There are many myths about Brandklipparen. One claims that the horse was over 40 years old. Another claims that the horse is buried in the schoolyard of the Cathedral School. One of the poems in Carl Snoilsky's Swedish Pictures is dedicated to Brandklipparen. Welcome aboard!
