One project Market Street Railway helped initiate and continues to champion is the revival of authentic vintage liveries on San Francisco's cable cars. And what better car dress for the holidays than Powel 13, painted in 1906-1921 green and red of United Railroads. The cable car signal tower, just repainted in similar colors, joins in the holiday festivities.
Decorated rail vehicles have a long history in San Francisco. For a number of years in the 1930s, Market Street Railway adorned its all-white private streetcar "San Francisco" for the holidays, often parking it on highly visible sections of non-revenue track Downtown. This shot is from 1935 or 1936 on Second Street at Market.
