New Public Library
The new Library, at Fifth Avenue from 40th to 42nd Streets, occupies the site of the old Croton Reservoir. It was built for $9,000,000. The cornerstone was laid on November 10, 1902, and the building was opened to the public on May 23, 1911. It contains over 1.5 million books, with room for 1 million more.
