How to make room for a light rail through the city (2020)Before the actual track work started, the city had to be prepared for the light rail. When an eight-meter-wide track needs to connect with the rest of the town, it influences the design of roads, bike paths, and sidewalks, which must then be rebuilt. Construction began in August 2017 and is expected to finish by 2021, when the final asphalt layer is applied to the last roads and bike paths. Project manager Svend Sørensen has overseen this work. Here, he discusses the construction process and how it shifts from a broad, conceptual view to detailed, practical realities. For example, the location of a manhole cover can present different challenges in practice than on paper. The goal is to unify everything into a higher unity, making the city a pleasant place for everyone to live and get around. My name is Svend Sørensen. I am the project manager for the construction work at Odense Light Rail. That is, the construction outside the actual light rail route. When I explain the construction work to people, I mean the work outside the light rail itself—it includes roads, sidewalks, and cycle paths. It also covers all the nearby roads and residential properties. For example, we have the Rosengårdcentret and IKEA. We have rebuilt the areas around them, and I have been responsible for that. In terms of construction, I was involved in the design phase. There, I served as a liaison between the theoretical plans and the various developers, including the mayor's administration, the municipal road authority, and other relevant parties. My role was to connect these plans to those who were actually carrying out the work. Turning a vision into a buildable project can be a complex process. For instance, if there are existing road wells in the area, they may need to be relocated a few meters, which can result in a 2-3 centimeter level difference, potentially causing puddles to form. It is essential to ensure these puddles are properly drained. From viewing the project from a helicopter to observing the detailed work on the ground, removing these puddles from the roads is an essential step. Overall, life is exciting and challenging—lots of balls in the air! Odense has a motto that it should be a green city, and we are planting around 1,500 trees in connection with the light rail. Those that we don't have space for along the light rail will be planted elsewhere, such as here on Ørbækvej, as a supplement to the existing trees. Once I finish the actual construction work here, we will have created optimal conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers in the city. For example, we've put a lot of thought into both pedestrians and cyclists. Meet a light rail driver (2025)Torben Asmussen has been a light rail driver at Odense Light Rail since the service began operating in May 2022. Even longer, because he was part of the first team of light rail drivers who were hired in 2021. In the video, he explains why he applied for the job at the time, and afterwards, he takes us into his workplace — the cockpit of a light rail train. My name is Torben Asmussen, and I've been working at Ban since we started in 2021. A typical day for me is nine hours of work with three days off, totaling 37 hours per week, spread across all days of the week. My shift on a Mix bus typically starts at 4 a.m. and lasts nine hours. Currently, it runs from noon until 9 p.m., spanning late afternoon to 1 a.m. During my shift, I usually make about five trips back and forth—from Hjallse to T T and back—each trip taking roughly an hour and a half. I applied for the light rail driver position when it was advertised on October 20. At that time, due to COVID-19 and my experience driving tourist buses abroad, I thought it might not be feasible. But I looked at the long-term prospects. Since I work in Copenhagen, an opportunity arose here, and I’ve always been inspired by trains on rails that seem to just fit onto a hairnet—yet they drive. So I applied, and I was hired here in F21. This is our workplace—the driver's cabin of a light rail vehicle. We have a key that fits the door and the vehicle, allowing us to activate everything. There’s a black button for neutral parking and to put it in drive, though we usually stay parked. There’s a black lever that controls the drive and brake—the only controls we have. It’s like an accelerator and brake combined. Also, there's a dead man’s switch, which activates as soon as I let go of it, and the vehicle either honks or brakes itself. I need to press this black lever every 17 seconds to prevent automatic braking. Inside the cabin, we have lights, lamps, a horn, and a ring lock—everything we need. The green button here is crucial for passengers. When we press it, the doors can be opened, indicated by a green light. Once the doors are open, the traction lock disengages, meaning we can't accelerate or brake, so the vehicle remains stationary. We then check the mirrors for passenger safety, and when everything looks good, the green light comes on again, and we continue driving. That’s it.
