Where should the Sunday trip go - Odense Light Rail (2024)This time, the trip has been finalized both in terms of time and location. The proposal for this Sunday's trip is to Jelse, located in the southern part of Odense, near the E20 highway. Initially, the village was quite far from Odense. However, over time, Hjallelse has grown significantly and has become part of Odense. The Svendborg Line has a station in Hjallelse. Are there good connections to Odense and the towns along the Sønderborg route? The latest addition to the line is the Light Rail, which terminates at this location. The Light Rail runs through the city to Tup. The train on the Svendborg Line departs from Hjallelse Station in Odense. This line opened in the summer of 1876. Right now, the motorcycle is on holiday, as we’ve had the chance to observe the progress of the light rail outdoors. The Light Rail kindly allowed a camera to be installed in the windshield, as mounting it outside could risk the camera coming loose. So, it was decided to mount it inside, though the wires and felt in the window give some unusual colors. Ignoring that, you can see the whole trip to Tarup. Here it is. At Svendborgvej, the distances between stations are relatively short to central Odense at each stop. The train stops only briefly but long enough for passengers to get on or off. On the left is the residential area, while on the right is a large industrial zone stretching all the way to the highway and beyond. Here is Munk Pærevej; we cross it in the background, where you can see the light rail garage, workshop, station, train supervision, and more. Parking at Odense Syd is designed for those who prefer not to bring their cars into the city, and free parking is available. We then enter an area where construction is still ongoing—namely, the new Oh in Time hospital. It’s set to become a huge hospital. The stop, Hospital Syd, isn’t operational yet, so from here, nearly 900 meters north, there are educational institutions. The light rail runs beneath the building here, with additional structures to the right. The overhead line isn’t perfectly straight because the power supply might wear out around Sommersted, but with a slight change of direction, it can cover a larger area. There’s also transverse traffic on the track, as many people use bikes to get around. Now, the trip heads toward Cortex Park, which features student housing and a variety of commercial buildings that are gradually appearing. We’re now approaching a large commercial area with shops of all sizes. Dennes SPS Aleve crosses Odense. The light rail began passenger service on May 28, 2022, stretching from Hjallelse in the southeast to Tarup in the northwest—about 14 kilometers. The trip from Jelse to Tarup, with stops at each station, takes roughly 40 minutes. The train set is nearly 30 meters long, weighing approximately 40 tons, and can accommodate around 200 passengers, including 60 seats. On the left is the Rose Cross Tent. Rosengårdcentret is named after the rose garden near Ringvejen, which once had a farm and greenhouse. Next is Munkerisvej, also known as Ringvejen, which changes direction at its intersection and runs parallel to the Light Rail towards Nyborgvej. On the right is the Korslkk Package, named after a farm that used to be on the left side of the road. We then reach Nyborvej, which we follow west; here, a track branching allows continuation toward Volsmose without closing the current route. On the left is Østerbæks Vej, and on the right is Ejby Møllevej. Straight ahead, you see Odense Cathedral, also called Sankt Knuds Kirke. Coming from Middelfartvej, you can also see the church straight ahead. To the right is Frederiksgade, crossing Frederiksbroen—the first cast-iron bridge in Denmark. The building on the right is the Korshær Hostel. Then we pass Albanigade; the building further up is Odense Courthouse, and just beyond it is the Albani Breweries. We then reach Odense Å, with the Catholic Sankt Albane Church ahead—the city’s oldest church. Before the church, you can see the descent to the Beking Cellar, which extends all the way to Thomas Btris Skade. To the left is Odense Cathedral, and to the right is Vestre Gade. HC Andersenhaven is nearby, close to HC Andersen's House. Less than 20 years ago, this area was mainly parking lots; now, it’s filled with buildings. Next is Østre Stationsvej; on the left is Nørregade, and on the right is Odense Railway Station Center, which opened in 1995, replacing the old station from 1914 that had become too small. Three commuters in the future Odense Light Rail (2014)Take a trip with different types of commuters in future Odense. Dorthe is a commuter. She works as a nurse at Odense University Hospital and lives in Ejby on the Island of Funen. She takes the train to and from Odense every day. When Dorthe arrives at the train station, she lines up to wait for the light rail. The information screen at the station shows the time until the next train arrives. There is a train every ten minutes, so Dorthe rarely waits more than a few minutes. The light rail train arrives, and Dorthe boards along with many other passengers coming from the east and west. It is one of the busiest stops. Many people are getting on and off here. Meanwhile, Dorthe's colleague Katja is driving from Asslev south of Odense. Katja parks her car at the large park-and-ride facility near the motorway and takes the light rail for the last stretch to OUH. Then she has time to look for a parking space. The traffic lights are synchronized with the light rail, making the trip comfortable and reliable. Dorthe uses the time to read and check her phone. On Ørbækvej, a wheelchair user accompanies her. The low-floor design of the light rail makes boarding easy, and people are quick to give way. At the university stops, many students get off, and some also disembark at the hospital with Dorthe. Here, only a moment passes before the train from the park-and-ride arrives, full of passengers. One of them is Katja. Delivering a Massive Tram to Odense Idrætspark (2026)A massive, high-stakes logistics operation unfolded in Odense on Monday, June 8, 2026! A specialized German heavy-haulage company transported a complete light rail train from the maintenance center in Hjallese to Odense Idrætspark via a flatbed truck. This rapid response ensures an increased service frequency between IKEA and Tarup Center starting Tuesday morning, June 9. The background crisis: Since May 22, 2026, Odense Letbane has been forced into severely reduced operations. The main contractor at the new hospital (Nyt OUH), OHPT, abruptly and without warning removed structural supports from a pedestrian bridge directly spanning the tracks. Consequently, the safety approval for that section was immediately suspended. The mileage trap: While the track near Nyt OUH remains completely blocked, Odense Letbane secured permission to run a limited shuttle service between IKEA and Tarup Center using just three trams. However, those three trams have now hit their maximum allowed mileage limit before mandatory safety inspections. To prevent a total shutdown, Odense Letbane brought in German train-transport specialists to swap out the maxed-out vehicles by carrying a fresh tram across the city streets! How to drill a 17.5 m long concrete pile into the ground (2020)Odense Light Rail is building a transformer station on Nyborgvej. A large drilling machine is used for this work. It drills downward through the soft soil layers. When solid clay appears, the drilling stops. This occurs at about 17.5 meters depth in this location. The drill is then slowly lifted. Simultaneously, free-flowing concrete is pumped into the hole. Once the drill is removed and the hole filled with concrete, iron reinforcement is placed into the concrete. The entire process takes approximately half an hour.
