Open Day for Jena Public Transport (2023)There is rarely as much activity at the Jena Nahverkehr depot in Burgau as there was on Saturday. Around 5,000 visitors accepted the transport company's invitation and explored behind the scenes during the open day. There was plenty to discover on the premises, especially the new illuminated tram, which caught the attention of many public transportation enthusiasts. It is not only bigger than the models used before, but also more comfortably equipped. For example, some of the seats now have USB charging ports for phones. The new tram also impressed us when we tried out the seats. We are excited to hold an open day this year, mainly to invite our passengers to see our new illuminated tram and all the updates we have made at our depot. We are there for the people of Jena. It has been six years since the last one, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, we welcome everyone here to our depot to see what we have accomplished over time. The tram workshop, in particular, was converted for the new illuminated tram. This area also drew considerable interest from visitors. At a technology exhibition, Jena Nahverkehr showcased both current and historic parts. There was also a rare opportunity to view a tram from all angles, including underneath. A special highlight for younger visitors was the "Future Drivers" event, where they could sit in a bus driver's seat and get a close-up look at the technology. The young residents of Jena even lovingly redesigned another bus, and their improvements will be preserved after the open day. The bus will also be repainted. They don't always drive through Jena. Yes, we will reconsider and update this periodically, but it's a good idea. Many past open days have let children immortalize themselves here, perhaps finding their reflection in the cityscape. The topic of attracting skilled workers also played a significant role on Saturday. Jena local transport not only provided information about career opportunities but also invited people to explore. Anyone could take a ride on the elevator bus themselves, even without a bus driver's license. The DEKRA stand was also inspiring. In a rollover simulator, visitors could experience firsthand what an emergency feels like. The special trips, however, were somewhat less adventurous. A tour on the historic tram was a particular highlight for many visitors, as was the city tour in the convertible bus, likely due to the sunny weather. Additionally, Jena Nahverkehr launched a shuttle service to Eisenberg. We are proud to do this today in Jena and Eisenberg. At our new subsidiary, JS Verkehrsgesellschaft, residents of Eisenberg are also invited to take a behind-the-scenes look, highlighting the connection between Jena and the Saale-Holstein district through public transportation. I think that’s a strong sign. Today, just in time for the open house, the new joint logo of Jena Nahverkehr and the newly named Verkehrsgesellschaft (transport company) was also introduced. For visitors, this was probably just a small detail, but for the transport companies, it signals a shared future. Documentary: New tram in Jena | Light tram from Stadler (2024)The new tram for Jena has been operating since December 2023, and there are now usually several routes running each day. 16 of the 33 trams ordered are 42 meters long, making them significantly longer than their predecessors. The new Stadler trams have been running in Jena for nearly four months now. They are called "light trams" in this city, and their primary purpose is to replace older vehicle types, but also, and most importantly, to increase capacity in the tram network because of their length. At first, they were only seen occasionally. Now, more and more vehicles appear on the network every day; usually at least one, but sometimes even more, with this new vehicle type. On December 15, 2023, the new Stadler vehicles were seen in scheduled service for the first time. To celebrate the start of scheduled service for the light tram, a ceremony was held at the depot in Borgau on the day of the maiden voyage. The new tram left the Borgau depot surrounded by cold parks and fog. Guests from Jena's public transportation and the city were also there. A cake shaped like the light tram was also cut. The first tram ride happened in the afternoon of that day. It was operated on tram line 5. Initially, the tram was primarily used on line 5 during the first few months. It is now also operated on lines 1 and 4, which are connected. Following a Europe-wide tender, Stadler was selected as the winner in mid-2021. In September 2021, the design of the new illuminated tramway was unveiled. Subsequently, work on upgrading the track infrastructure and depot to accommodate the new tramway also started. In December 2021, construction began on the first illuminated tramway in Valencia, located in Stadlerberg. On May 5, 2023, the first new illuminated tramway will be transported to Jena by a low-loader. In August, the conversion work at the depot was completed. Not long after the first vehicles arrived in the summer, the first test and trial runs could begin. The maiden run on December 16 was then made by a vehicle with the number 801. The new Stadler trams are intended primarily to offer more space than the older vehicles. Sixteen of the twenty-four vehicles ordered are 42 meters long and have seven sections. The remaining eight vehicles are 32.5 meters long, but even the shorter version is shorter than their predecessors. The predecessors, the GT6N, are approximately five meters longer, measuring just under 27 meters in length. In January 2024, nine more vehicles of the short version, i.e., 32 meters, were ordered. A total of 17 will be delivered in this configuration, along with 33 light tracks. This means that nine vehicles have already been ordered from the option for 19 additional vehicles originally agreed upon in the contract. There is currently an option to order ten more vehicles that can still be exercised. The new vehicles are designed to match the track width of the Jenah road network, which is 1000 mm. They can reach a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour. The low-floor proportion of these vehicles is 100%. Of course, the new vehicles are not only meant to provide passengers with more space but also to modernize the fleet and increase passenger comfort. The vehicles feature a sleek and modern design. The front tapers at the bottom and is rounded at the sides of the windscreen. It also features narrow headlights and taillights, along with an LED matrix display. Electronic rearview mirrors are also included. The front and side designs of the vehicles resemble those of the trams in Gemünden, Austria. In Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, there are also trams. The similarities are especially noticeable on the side panels. For example, the doors have light strips that glow green when they are released and turn red or flash when they close or the release is revoked. Each vehicle has four double-swinging doors on each side, and the end carriage has two single doors on each side. Depending on the travel direction or platform side, there are usually two double doors in the second carriage and one double door in the fourth and sixth carriages. This depends on the direction of travel because all vehicles are two-way. Otherwise, the cars stay fairly straight, bending only slightly on the underside. The paintwork and stickers on the new cars feature a dark blue window band with a lighter blue decorative stripe underneath. Above and below this, on the roof or lower edge, there are white stripes. Jena's new tram in operation! | Railfunction (2023)I want to introduce you to the new tram in Jena. In this video, you'll learn more about the light rail/tram connections and find out when they'll be in operation. On December 16th, 2023, the moment finally arrived. The first illuminated tram with passengers made its rounds in Jena. At 10:45 a.m., it departed from the depot in Bgau. With many guests in attendance, Andreas Möller, the managing director of the local transportation company, kicked off the event with a spectacular fog show. The tram exited the hall, decorated with ribbons at both the front and rear. Below was the inscription: Maiden voyage of the illuminated tram, December 16th, 2023. Around 11:45 a.m., it started its journey toward Lobeda Ost. The traditional tram TW26 and the party tram carried passengers through the city. After leaving Lobeda Ost, it continued toward the city center. Today, the new tram link in Jena was officially inaugurated. In the next few days, the vehicles will be on line 5 and available for use.
