In the Vienna Tram Museum: A Century of Public Transport History (2012) There are 109 vehicles on display at the former Erdberg depot. Spanning a century of history across 7560 square meters and featuring exclusive special trips, it's an experience for the whole family. Director Hans Baierl guides a tour of the exhibition.
Hello and welcome to the Vienna Tram Museum, operated by Wiener Linien. My name is Hans Bel. I am standing here on a Type D vehicle, reconstruction from 1901, with the number 244. Three hundred of these vehicles were built. This small railcar, with open platforms, offered space for approximately 30 people. The driver used to stand here, where I am now. At the turn of the century, the driving staff had to stand outside. This meant that in winter it was very cold and they had to do their work wearing a very thick felt coat. In the former Erdberg depot, there are a total of 109 vehicles. They are not only visually spruced up with great attention to detail. Here we are in the museum workshop where the cars are overhauled for special weekends and anniversary trips. This means that they are serviced and maintained. Here we are now underneath the tram with the electrical cables and the usual parts that belong to a tram chassis, such as the brakes and compressed air tank. In addition to the electric motor and axle, the rails and handbrake, in particular, must be tested. Now nothing stands in the way of a trip, or what is this supposed to mean? Holes are created because these service hatches are used to access the mechanical parts of the vehicle, such as the carbon holder and the collector on the electric motor.
Contrary to what many people believe, our museum also features historic buses, including regular buses, double-deckers, and articulated buses. The bus collection consists of vehicles built between 1949 and 1978. I am now sitting here as a minor celebrity. This bus was on the road on August 1, 1976, when the Reichsbrücke collapsed; in other words, the bus went under with the Reichsbrücke. The bus was severely damaged, but luckily, the driver was okay. The bus was then lifted from the floating raft, repaired, and returned to its original condition. It remained in regular service in Vienna until 1989. A century of history on 7560 square meters of exhibition space and exclusive special trips - an experience for the whole family. I hope you enjoyed the insight into our historic vehicle collection. See you again at the Vienna Tram Museum. By bohmannvideo -
