The Trams of Brisbane (1969)This song is based on a speech I gave as a BGS 6th-former to the Lions Club in 1969, the year they removed the Brisbane trams and trolleybuses. I had over 200 pictures, taken as a teenager in the 60s, digitized by David Myers at Digital Masters. The squeal of steel on steel is gone. The hissing of the trolley wheel is replaced by silence. The tracks are covered. The wires come down to sound. The chicken runs. The tropical sun no longer shines on strips of steel in the streets. They removed the trolleybus and track, covering the tracks with a 'T' in the name of CL, the motor car. Men and conductors wear white caps. Women in hats and gloves. Police direct traffic in the city with helmets. The mission was a shared sky—the dream spread around street corners. We start the track, and the tracks will die in the name of the coming world. Heat. Heat. Heat. In their days, silence is gone. The hissing of the trolley wheel will be missed in silence. The tracks are covered.By Anthony Ronaldson - April 13, 1969.
