The Melbourne Tramcar Preservation Association Haddon Workshops (2024)This video shows a rare operational tour of the Melbourne Tramcar Preservation Association (MTPA) Haddon Workshops. In this video, MMTB W3 Class No. 663 was operational and available for short rides around the workshops' test track. The MTPA workshops are located in the rural area of Haddon, approximately 15 km west of Ballarat, Victoria. Visits to the MTPA Haddon Workshops must be requested in advance. For more information, please visit their website at http://www.mtpa.com.au Unfortunately, due to legal issues, you can no longer ride the trams at the MTPA Haddon Workshops. However, some of the restored trams are available to ride on at the Ballarat Tram Museum near Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. The trams from the MTPA Haddon Workshops that are on display at the Ballarat Tram Museum are swapped on a rotational basis from time to time. Therefore if you would like to ride on any of the MTPA Haddon trams today a visit to the Ballarat Tram Museum is a must. For more information on the Ballarat Tram Museum, please visit http://www.btm.org.au The Melbourne Tramcar Preservation Association (MTPA) was founded in 1974 to preserve and restore to operational condition trams used throughout Melbourne, Australia. 2024 will mark the MTPA's 50th anniversary. The MTPA's fleet of trams consists of the following: Victorian Railways No 41 (former 1600mm broad gauge tram) MMTB L Class Tram No. 103 MMTB W Class No. 357 MMTB W2 Class No. 407 MMTB W3 Class No. 663 MMTB W4 Class No. 670 MMTB SW5 Class No. 849 MMTB W5 Class No. 792 All the above trams operate on 1435mm standard-gauge tramway tracks. The Victorian Railways No. 41 tram was converted to standard gauge as no operational broad gauge tramways exist in Australia today. The MTPA has done an excellent job of restoring these historic trams over the last 50 years. It is well worth visiting the Haddon Workshops to see their collection of historic trams regardless of whether you can ride on them or not.
